Any difference of rules from the playtest?

3e uses the SRD which shares almost the same "DNA" with the retro clones, with Castles & Crusades sort of being the missing link to the TSR's D&D. So I wouldn't say 3e is the biggest change imo. 4e with the cosmology and AEDU would be my pick.

Since we have the Advanced Player's Guide, it would be nice to have a Basic Player's Guide for a PF lite. I would think that intro sets nowadays are only crippleware where they just serve the same purpose of those free rpg day giveaways. The only way a successful intro set would work is that...

Were there monster building rules in the Essentials DM Kit Book?

To the OP, you can try out Castles & Crusades, which is a bridge between 3.5 and older editions. You can also go retro-clone which are all free. Labyrinth Lord is my favourite amongst them.
