In my games I always gave them Read Magic, Detect Magic plus an additional 1d4 as starting spells in their spell book. All other spells were received as part of questing or such.

Which is where our Savage Adventures sourcebook for Fantastic World comes into play. Its release date is not until Q2 of 2006 however.

Im pretty excited about the book myself. I have been going through some commentary from proofreaders and adjusting things. The goal is to make this a product worth something.
