Damen scouts ahead of the party, and his wariness pays off. He spots a massive bear directly in the group's path and is able to steer everyone away while remaining unobserved himself. It isn't the only close encounter during the trek; throughout the early afternoon, a pack of wolves periodically howl from
behind the party, as if they're stalking the heroes. But as evening approaches, the howls stop and no more animals are seen - not even birds.
The party reaches the edge of the swamp as darkness begins to fall, so you decide it's a good place to make camp. It is an extremely quiet night. You felt surrounded by living things in the earlier section of the forest, but here... there's nothing.
The night is uneventful, if tense due to the unnatural silence. In the morning, when everyone is ready, you continue into the swamp on your best-guess course to Toeto's tribe. A few hours of trudging through the swampwater follows. There aren't even any trails to follow, so the experience is thoroughly unenjoyable. On the bright side, the mountains in the far distance do seem to be turning east, as the map showed. With any luck, you'll reach the lizardfolk tribe soon.
"Caw!" you all hear some
thing cry out loudly from just ahead in the swamp. You guess it to be a bird, but there's something wrong with the noise. It almost sounds like a man poorly imitating a bird. A few moments later, it steps into view from behind a copse of trees.
[sblock=Nature 24]That almost looks like a lizardfolk! Or rather, it looks half-lizardfolk and half bird. It appears to be flightless.[/sblock]
Whatever the thing is, it doesn't seem pleased to see you. It rakes the muddy swampwater with a clawed foot as if preparing to charge. The cawing continues, but apparently from another one of the bird-lizards. This one remains silent while another one steps out beside it, shrieking angrily and repeatedly at you. The noise is absolutely piercing; you feel a headache coming on just listening to the thing squawk at you. The ruckus attracts the attention of yet another pair of the things on the other side of the trees. Again, one of them squawks and the other remains silent.
Suddenly, the bird-lizards begin to charge! They take off straight at you, kicking up swamp water with each step and closing the distance alarmingly fast.
GM: | Please place yourself on the map anywhere in rows Q, R, or S.
The bird-lizards get a 12 on initiative. If you beat that, you can act first. Then they'll go, then everyone else again.
