The party is slow to start, and at the beginning Castor sits in the green room, chatting with the musicians. The green room is really just another section of the Grand ballroom, separated by the main party by sliding walls. There's a few tables and chairs, a coatrack, and a case of beverages, but it feels like a deserted corridor, with the sounds of the party echoing through. The drummer he's been assigned has a nice sense of rhythm and the heart of a teacher, and an hour in, he and Castor are tapping away at the edge of a fold-away table that has been brought out to hold drinks.

Castor is confident in his route to the stage, and from time to time makes his way to the door, which leads to another door, which leads to the party. He stands in the doorway, leaning against its edge and appreciating the smells and sounds of the celebration as it begins to get louder and louder.

The sound check went well; he has no concerns about his performance, which should be in about an hour now.

Aaron suggests that Tatjana act as cousins, after all its best for ladies to be escorted at such events.
Someone should probably keep an eye out for an engineer.
[/sblock]

Aaron, decked out in a sharp suit and expensive shoes and hat easily finesses his way into the party. (The hat of course gets immediatley left at the door.) He introduces himself as a visitor out of Santo, having just landed and being thrilled that such a event is taking place. "I'm in the business of antique ships, you'd be suprised what some are willing to pay for a ship that reminds them of their youth."

He gets a glass in hand more for appearance than anything else. He keeps an eye open for any gambling taking place, or any businessmen from the shipyards.

Tatjana

Tatjana had spent a few hours looking for a fitting dress, and there have been various choices at the local merchants. In the end, she decided to underline her natural beauty with a slinky cocktail dress, a black satin mini dress with spaghetti straps, and elegant heels. She did not usually dress up like that, prefering more comfortable attire, but it wasn't a usual occasion, so why not. The shoes were the only part of the outfit that she was a little uncomfortable with, as she felt safer with a more stable stance. But she did have a little practice with them and was doing alright. Even the fairly high price* for such a small amount of cloth didn't bother her much, she had more than enough money, and she had to agree that it did make for a stunning appearance.

Aaron's suggestion, to act as cousins, seemed like a good idea, so she agreed to the little charade. She introduced herself simply as Nadja.

As the attendance builds and the alcohol flows, the noise and the smiles in the room grow. Once the acrobats depart to the cheers of the small crowd, the orchestra begins to play a light airy piece, suitable for a quadrille, a group social dance filled with twirling ladies moving from partner to partner. Those dancing look to be the sons and daughters of merchants from the region, while the parents watch approvingly and speak quietly of potential alliances.

[Sblock=Lucius]Lucius sees that Castor has emerged from the green room and is leaning casually against the wall. He has observed the crowd as it has grown, and has noted a few interesting arrivals. The first is his boss from ITT, Colleen Sherman, and her husband, Bill. She smiles an acknowledgment towards him, perhaps a little surprised that Lucius is here, but does not move over for a conversation. He is also surprised to see Melody Josephs here, although he is not surprised she's alone. Like him, she's a recent recruit to the Alliance - she is in full dress uniform tonight, in fact. Unlike him, though, she hadn't been able to hide her past browncoat ties. Her career is dead, and he wouldn't be surprised if Balino has her here just so other guests can laugh at her. Finally he sees Castor perk up momentarily as the arrival of someone named Captain Derek Wildstar is announced, but Lucius isn't sure why. [/Sblock]

[Sblock=Castor] Castor observes the party as it grows, hearing the rhythmic movements of the formal dances that have begun. He also keeps an ear on the arriving guests. The names don't mean much, but the ripples that run through the crowd tell him something about each. The cluster of people near him consists of a number of small players in the Blue Sun corporation, and they react rather strongly and negatively to the arrival of a Mr. Julian Mason and his wife. "Don't know how he's still in business," one of the Blue Sun's says. "Lotta balls showing up though," comes the answer, and that one continues, "Li, keep yourself between him and Balino tonight." At the same time this conversation is happening, Castor hears the arrival of Captain Derek Wildstar is announced to no particular reaction, except that Castor recognizes him as the guy who has been nosing about Lucky Strike the past week or so. [/sblock]

[Sblock=Derek]
Derek finds himself at the entrance of the ballroom looking out over a sea of possible investors. Based on his brief perusal of the guest list, he has identified a few good possibilities. The first is Mr. Balino, the host of the ball himself. The biggest business man on Liann Xin, both in terms of girth and wealth, Balino is rolling in it, and his reputation indicates he won't hesitate to spend if he can see a way to advance his own career and his stature within the Alliance. Derek sees him moving easily through the crowd.

Michaela St. John is another prospect. She's said to run a discreet cargo and passenger transport service operating amongst the planets surrounding Red Sun. Derek doesn't know about her finances, but it's possible she would be interest in taking on another ship. He hasn't seen her yet, and hasn't heard her announced since he's been at the ball.

Julian Mason runs the Rio Tinto mining company. He's been a player in the region forever, despite the Blue Sun Co.'s attempts to squeeze out the independent miners he contracts with. Somehow holds the corporate dogs at bay, and that must require resources. Derek hasn't seen Julian yet - apparently a thin, silver haird man missing his left hand, is his information is correct.

Finally, on the other end of the spectrum, is Blue Sun Corporation itself. Blue Sun has been known to provide grants to captains willing to take on contract work for the corporation, but usually not, as far as he knows, enough to finance an entire ship's purchase price in advance. May still be worth a shot.

[sblock= Tatjana]
Tatjana takes in the scene before her. Before they arrived, Derek shared the information he has been able to gather over the past couple days, in terms of potential sources of funding. There may, of course be other leads. [sblock=Derek's leads]

Blue Sun has been known to provide grants to captains willing to take on contract work for the corporation, but usually not, as far as he knows, enough to finance an entire ship's purchase price in advance. May still be worth a shot, and there are several people in Blue Sun corporate suits throughout the ballroom. [/sblock]

Not long after she arrives, several of the young merchants begin to approach her only to be cut off by a stern glance from a parent. Next to her, a feminine voice chuckles, "I'm afraid you will not be made to feel welcome by those who have plans for their sons and daughters, my dear. Still, there may be a few men here willing to ignore their mothers' commands. If, indeed that is why you decided to join us tonight." Tatjana turns to see a, dark skinned, dark haired woman wearing a lovely, tropical dress. She is around forty, and has perhaps a few more pounds than she did in her younger days, but she is ravishing nonetheless. "Ihilani Balino," she says pleasantly, offering her hand. "And you are?" Aaron watches the layered social interactions that are playing out before him, and isn't surprised to see Tatjana's arrival has altered them somewhat. Several men try to approach her, perhaps for a dance, before being shepherded away by a parent who has other plans for them. Social conventions being what they are, there are no girls approaching him, but he does receive a few interested glances, as well as a few scowls from observant mothers. Nearby to his right, Aaron seen an absolutely gorgeous, forty-ish woman approach Tatjana and begin to engage her in conversation. He notes that she is subtly interposing herself between Tatjana and the dance area, and the men's gazes begin to fall away from both her and Tatjana, as if the older woman has marked her somehow.

By contrast on his left, Aaron hears two matronly women in conservative dresses speaking to each other conspiratorially, and relishing their comments. "...can't believe she's even here! It's not as if she earned that rank; must have gotten it under one of the Amnesties." Aaron follows their gaze to a woman standing alone near wall of the ballroom. She is in her mid-to-late thirties, and wears an Alliance uniform indicating the rank of captain. "'Captain Josephs'" indeed. I heard her last crew mutinied, robbed her blind and set her adrift in the Black. Then she joined the Alliance and expected to get a ship." The other: "Ha! She's lucky someone was even wiling to stick her behind a desk, even if it is on this backwater."

Derek Wildstar

Derek decides to go staight to Mr. Balino. Might as well start at the top. As he approaches the man he smiles and turns on the charm full blast. "Mr. Balino! Exquisite ball! You have truely outdone yourself, sir!" He waves his hand out across the crowd.

OOC: When do I make a skill check roll? Would it be like: Willpower+Persuation for this type check? So d12+d8? Then later Willpower+Negotiation when trying to work out a deal? So d12+d10?

Derek intercepted Mr. Balino as he disengaged from conversation with a merchant couple who he gather is from Jiangyin. When Deeks gets the big man's attention, he sees one or two other people nearby, including a polished-looking Chinese man in a Blue Sun uniform trying to look like they weren't just about to try initiate a conversation with Balino themselves. While he notices them, Balino flashes an appriasing glance flashes across his face and up and down Derek for a moment before the broad smile reaquires its practiced genuineness.

"Welcome, my friend -- I'm so pleased you are enjoying yourself. I'm afraid I cannot place your name, but I am sure the fault is mine...."

ooc: if you are not sure that something you wnat to do will succeed, you can propose a roll, and when you are comfortable that it would be the most apropo combination of skills, you can go ahead and make the roll. Otherwise you can ask me what dice. In most case, I will ask you for a roll and thell you the dice I would like. In a conversation, no need for a roll until you get to a real decision point - initiating the conversation, and laying for the foundation for the perusation attempt, etc, will be done through roleplay, and that roleplay may affect bonus or penalties placed on any particular roll that comes out of the conversation.

ooc2: Further, because of Mr. Balino's presence in the room, it's easy to find him and see who he is speaking to; all the characters (except Castor, of course) can see Derek speaking to Balino at this, for example.

Castor knows that the professional thing to do would be to would be to stay in the Green room until he's on. But singing is no longer his profession, he tells himself, and the opportunities provided by those here are great. Maybe a job, maybe just a ticket off this world.

And so he starts walking around the room, smiling, running his hand along the wall to get a sense of his position. The smells and sounds are intoxicating -- the women's perfumes have been applied to excess and there is a sea of hibiscus and vanilla hitting him in olfactory waves. He can leave the wall and return when a group is too close, and when he does, he'll smile, and as he passes wish the visitors an pleasant evening and to enjoy the party.

As he does so, he flashes his perfect smile (showing his teeth that to him always look just a little too big for his head) and moves on. He approaches Balino, who is talking to Wildstar, one of the names that caught Castor's attention. But he knows better than to interrupt.

If the opportunity presents itself, he will introduce himself to Julian Mason -- anyone who angers the Blue Sun people just for showing up is worth a conversation, he thinks.

"Me!? The name is Derek Wildstar. I am most impressed by the entertainment. A most eclectic group to be sure. How ever did you arrange such an event. It takes true vision to pull something off like this. You sir, are a genius. No wonder anyone that is anybody here on Liann Xin is here." Deek scans around the room for effect and to see who is doing what. But he quickly turns his attention back to Mr. Balino. "Well! I am sure that you have many guests to entertain. I would be pleased to be able to talk with you more at your leisure. Unfortunately I have business to attend to in the morning and will probably have to make it an early night." Derek finishes with a bow.

Castor:

Moving throughout the crowd, Castor notes few uncertain titters of recognition, like "Well how the hell would I know if he looks like Casper McMenomy or not, hon? You were the what had a poster on yer wall all them years." He has a decent idea of the direction Mason should be in based on the orientation of the Blue Sun reps' voices, and he can hear by the rich bass voice that Balino is in the same direction. As he passes near the big man, he feels a heavy hand clap him on the shoulder and Balino says, "Enjoy the party, McMenomy! Looking forward to the show." The last words, apparently said as Balino is turning his face back to Wildstar.

Derek:

Derek gets the feeling that Balino might have seen through the flattery, but that he'd enjoyed it just the same. "Wildstar, is it?" There is a slight pause and Derek can almost see the man mentally scanning his guest list and coming up empty. The smile doesn't change, though. "What kind of business are you in, Mr. Wildstar?"

While waiting for the answer, Balino gives a smile and a nod of recognition to a strangely handsome strangely handsome man passing nearby - scars cover the man's unseeing face, but only seem give him a distinctive look. Then, as if realizing the nod ans smile were useless, claps the man on the shoulder. "Enjoy the party, McMenomy! Looking forward to the show," Balino says, before turning back to Derek.

Derek pauses a moment and smiles before continuing. "Well... I guess you can say I'm in the shipping business. I normally captain a ship. But said ship was 'acquired' by another individual. I have been following after it and have finally found it here at Second Life Ships and Scrap. I am currently working on trying to 'acquire' it back."
