Wolfen in D&D

Lobo Lurker

Why does this need to be so complicated? ;)

What size do you want these creatures to be?
Do they need to be a playable race?
How 'powerful' do you want them to be?
Is an ECL okay or would you like to use Racial Levels?

TAME Build
Size: Medium
Attributes: +4 Str/-2 Int/-4 Cha
+2 racial bonus to Survival checks
+2 racial bonus to Search/Spot/Listen checks
Base Speed: 40 ft.
Lowlight Vision

I'd allow this as a ECL +0 playable race (but if I did, I'd punch up the Half-Orc a little)

I don't think wolfen should have rend, since dogs & wolves don't have a claw attack. Wolfen would normally use Large weapons. STR 25 DEX 15 says "strong & fast" to me, for a creature ca 10-12' tall!

I just noticed the alignment is still "awlays neutral"; I forget but I think that the manimal template might change that. Or you might just do it. ;)

Gotta run, but hopefully someone else can look it up.

Changed it above, thx.

I'd compromise and go Dex 16, so at least they'd get the +3 modifier. On Strength..the Minotaur has a Str 19. I'd say Str 23, Dex 16. The ogre has like a 21 Str so 23 should be plenty. And you're right, no rend. Claws would not make sense. I still like the Howl idea though. And in response to Lobo, yes I would like to work them so they could also be a playable race, but not until after the nuts and bolts are worked out. Then I could do the template based off of that.

I vote for bugbear stats ... for large size I'd go for a full +8 str instead of a bugbear's +4 str ... the rest seems like it would okay to keep as is (reassign skill points, etc)

Looks good to me - I agree, STR 23 is plenty. I think it's fair enough to make them stronger than ogres since animals are mostly far stronger than humans for equivalent mass (chimp ca 6x human) and ogres are basically big humans.

Everything's lookin' good to me...

But I must apologize...sleep deprivation made my last response a little off...Scent is in the DMG & MM. As for Monstrous Apperance- that must come from some other game.

Hi,

I've been running an adventure set in the Wealdath forest of Tethyr (FR) featuring wolfen based on the Rackham Confrontation miniatures which I think are some of the most impressive-looking minis around. Here's my version of their stats:

Large Monstrous Humanoid
Hit Dice: 4d8+8 (26 hp)
Initiative: +2
Speed: 40 ft.
Armor Class: 15 (–1 size, +2 Dex, +4 natural), touch 11, flat-footed 13
Base Attack/Grapple: +3/+12
Attack: Reaper +10 melee (2d6+5/19-20/x2) or bite +9 melee (1d8+5) or crossbow +6 ranged (2d8/19-20/x2)
Full Attack: Reaper +10 melee (2d6+5/19-20/x2) or bite +9 melee (1d8+5) or crossbow +6 ranged (2d8/19-20/x2)
Space/Reach: 10 ft./10 ft.
Special Attacks: --
Special Qualities: Low-light vision, DR 5/silver, scent
Saves: Fort +3, Ref +6, Will +4
Abilities: Str 21, Dex 15, Con 15, Int 10, Wis 11, Cha 8
Skills: Listen +4, Move Silently +4, Spot +4, Survival +2*
Feats: Alertness, Weapon Focus (reaper), TrackB
Environment: Temperate forests
Organization: Solitary, pair or pack (6-10)
Challenge Rating: 3
Treasure: Standard
Alignment: Usually chaotic neutral
Advancement: By character class
Level Adjustment: +3

Adult Wolfen stand 9 to 10 feet tall and weigh 600 to 650 pounds. Their skin color ranges from pale grey to black. Wolfen speak Sylvan and those specimens who boast Intelligence scores of at least 12 also speak Elven. Wolfen worship a fierce aspect of Selune, known as Yllia.

*Wolfens have a +4 racial bonus on Survival checks when tracking by scent.

Wolfen Characters
Wolfen are often barbarians or rangers. Sorcerors are known as Lone Wolves. Female wolfen sometimes become clerics of Yllia, known as Sacred Vestals.

Cheers

Richard
