Well, you are right that if you want only two encounters a day, then the current system doesn't work well for that.
But then again, the current system doesn't work well if you want 12 combats in a day.
That's why I think we need rules to tailor the healing and recovery system to teh pace we, as DMs, want for our games.
The wound system you mention is great, I think that's a good way to bring gritty into the game. I love that it is the player who is in control of the wounds his PC suffers.
