"Feats" given to you by class are feature, and do not turn off. If you want to quote the PHB that they do, go for it. But a class feature does not turn "off" if you don't meet the prereqs.

It counts as the feat and then directs you to go read up on Chapter 6 (Feats) for more info.

I'm not saying I like it, and I'm not saying I wouldn't change it, but it is exactly how it is written.

Well, it does by RAW, but it doesn't by FAQ, so it doesn't. FAQ trumps RAW.

Anyhow, on topic, I reckon str paladins can be quite awesome.
Reasons (if dumping cha):
1) Str/Wis contribute to different defences.
2) OAs as previously noted
3) Does not require an implement.

On the question of cha power choices at certain levels, either cherrypick str-based powers from other classes at those levels (with a MC power-swap feat), as previously noted, or simply take a lower level power. You are never required to take cha-based powers.

That's an interpretation(and I think a bad one) of what's being written.

If you have a 14 Str and 12 Con as a Paladin, you still have a class feature that counts as the Armor Proficiency(Plate) feat.

The sample characters(yes, I know) in H1, Dragonborn Paladin and Tiefling Warlord both have 12 Cons and are wearing Plate and Chain respectively. If you were right, the best armor that someone could wear if they had a 12 Con is Leather.

It isn't a bad interpretation. The armor proficiencies count as those feats and if you lose a prerequisite for a feat it turns off. They worded it perfectly to punish people.

Tracking down the FAQ was a little more effort than it should have been given the information in it but their wording is indeed unintended and those feats are not supposed to turn off.

Or they worded it perfectly as I used it in my 2nd sentence.

All throughout 3.5, if you needed the prereq for a feat from a class feature, it said so. I'm not sure why you think it would have changed without them calling it out.

Poor wording or not, given the examples we have the intent seems pretty clear. You do not need to meet the feat prerequisities to gain the benefits of a class feature.

So, my idea is a human str build pally str18, dex13, con13, int8, wis16, chr12 including racial bonus(the dm is boosting the pb to 26). Bastard Sword, Heavy Shield, Plate Armor building towards the Higher tier heavy blade feats(2nd feat toughness). But I can't help but wonder if in the end I will have as good a defender as a chr pally. The rest of the party (last time I heard) was going to be a DB Wizard, an Eladrin Warlord, and I believe a rogue of some sort. Given the emphasis on roles in the new edition I don't want to find myself with a poor defender.
I am worried about an earlier post regarding the need for a pally to meet the plate armor prereq as clearly this build will not and i'm not looking to cheese the dm.

Unaligned Pally of Sehanine (sort of a ripoff of a certain moon centric comicbook hero (i know super nerdy /shrug)) if anyone was curious.
