No. Boring. Shallow. Bland.

If I ever play D&D again it'll be 1E.

This made me spit up my juice a little.

In terms of mechanically boring, shallow, and bland, fighters and rogues truly got the shaft in this game and low level wizards and illusionists prayed for house cats to stay away.

I just thought if funny that going from 4e with complaints of boring it'd lead not to a game like Rolemaster, Hero, or GURPS, but a game with less options written in it than even 2nd ed or 3rd ed.

Different strokes for different folks and all that.

So, what are we supposed to discuss here? ;)

I hope someone explains to me how it was not true that 1E or OD&D and co. were not "bland" (especially for Fighters and Rogues), since I have never played them or even seen the rules, but everything I have heard so far suggests that they can't have been that interesting.

I must admit I am surprised how many OD&D preponents there seem to be still around, because I think there are much better systems around.

But at the end of they day, if they are enjoyng it and can find groups, good luck to them!

I wonder how long this thread will last?

I think the "non-boring" part is more a question of style, not core mechanics. In play, its really up to the DM and players to bring that style alive. And, as has been discussed in another thread here recently, many people like the simpler charecter options older editions offer.

But of course I haven't played 1E in 20 years...

OD&D/Basic D&D were as boring as the people who played them. The rules were simple and loose and required more from the DM and players to make the magic. Complex mechanics were not needed to make the game interesting. People make games fun, not mechanics. Its much easier with current and recent editions to get caught up and lost in game mechanics simply because there are so many more of them.

OD&D/Basic D&D= Books
3E/4E= Movies

Absolutely.

Complex mechanics were not needed to make the game interesting.
Of course not. But better mechanics sure are nice.

So gamers get distracted by bright shiny objects?
