Change to Brutal Strike: Making it more Brutal

Stalker0

Legend
I think the 1st level fighter power brutal strike is a bit weak compared to the other options. This is a slight change to keep it competitive.

The brutal property is covered in the AV.

Brutal Strike

Hit: 3[w]+str damage. For this damage, your weapon gains brutal 1. If it already has the brutal property, it increases by 1.

If I remember right, the PHB was erratad to read "Miss: Brute Strike is not used."

So you basically have a daily that's guaranteed to hit or not be used. In my opinion, for a level 1 ability, that's just dandy.

that wasn't errata..Brutal strike has always been reliable (ie. a miss does not use the daily)...most Fighter dailies are reliable.

Well the PHB (at least the 1st ones sent out) doesn't list the "Miss" as part of the power. So I thought the OP may not have known, hence thinking the ability was weak.

I know about it, thing is the other fighter power is reliable, does a bit less damage, but also heals you. I think its generally better than Brute Strike.

Although I admire your determination I would say this would get quickly abused, take for example a Large Executioners Axe, AV, 2d6 damage since the size and die has been increased while still retaining the brutal 2, now with your new descriptor that would become a Brutal 3, making the lowest possible roll, on 2d6 Brutal 3 = 8. Brutal Strike is 3W Reliable, meaning the minimum damage you would be able to get our of that with no str mod is 24, That seems rather overpowered and easily powergamed.

Although I realize my example is niche, there are those around that would home in on this like a pack of rabid sharks to a bleeding goat. Perhaps a better solution would be to increase the weapon damage to 4w

Erm... no. Let's use your example, a large executioner's axe, 2d6 and brutal 2, meaning it does at least 6 damage, i.e. 4 x 6 = 24 damage, with no strength modifier (the same as 3[W] and brutal +1)

Now look at the averages: A brutal 2 axe has an average of 9 damage, i.e. 36 damage on average with 4[W].

With 3[W] and increase of brutal by one, you get an average of 10 damage, i.e. 30 dmg with 3[W] and brutal +1.

And now the maximum damage: With 4[W], it's 48 damage, with 3[W], it's 36.

Your version is strictly more powerful than Stalker0's idea. If we now compare it to the results of the 3[W] without any change (the axe again):

Min. Dmg: 18 damage.
Avg. Dmg: 27 damage.
Max Dmg: 36 damage.

We see that the increase of brutal by one increases the minimum damage (+6) and the average damage (+3). Your solution increases everything.

Looking at the effects of the increase of brutal, compared to a basic attack (again with no Str modifier added: Min 6, Avg 9, Max 12), it's worth less than an extra basic attack (esp. if you do have a positive Str mod), so it's about half an action... which sounds right, looking at Comeback Strike (which allows you to heal, i.e. worth about an action), as the +1[W] from Brute Strike is less than an action - with the extra bit of brutal, it gets to be worth as much as one action (approximately), as it has to compensate for the Strength modifier.

Cheers, LT.

Its definitely not weak. 3W Reliable is very, very solid especially if you're using a two hander (specifically a maul, for a glorious 6d6 damage).

My players are now lv6 and brute strike is by far the best daily in the group (well, it is tied with that warlord crap where everybody gets +4 to attack the solo until the end of the encounter). I fear it whenever it appears. There's no way I'd make it stronger, and I would caution against the micro-balancing of individual powers in general. The "brutal brute strike" might seem fine for the character you have in mind but when more optimized fighter comes along it could get scary.
