The Back Room

[sblock=OOC]Just so there's no confusion... Reggie is human. My character, Cross, is a tiefling (and the coolest tiefling on living 4e, I might add).[/sblock]

Kamotz barely looks up from his own notes. (Passive insight/perception) But he understands the underlying meaning in the young mans words, The ring comes back, though the love may be, lost...

He makes note of those intentions, but enjoys the idea that the girl may still be alive and in love, and hopes she is only captured by something he can kill.

Magnus leaned over the table, squinting at the ring in the drawing muttering to himself. Finally he looked up at Reggie.

And the woman it's attached to?

"What do you know of her?" , he starts defensively, but softens his tone after considering the question's speaker. "You... you don't... You know not." He looks back at the picture, shaking his head. "I need... I... I want..." he stops momentarily, before redirecting his attention on Magnus, "all I require is the ring."
"The brokenhearted boy his love would find,
though not the maid, the ring he would retrieve.
These priorities entertain. I'm signed!
This biting farce compells me not to leave."
Reggie's head drops in shame, "That is all I have. If you have no questions, then I tire of your ridicule..."

[sblock=Mikara]The contracts appear to be in order... but then again the only laws that have ever concerned you were the laws of tooth & nail (which also explains why you've never concerned yourself with the ways of the streets).[/sblock]
[sblock=Kamotz]Reggie's remorse seems genuine, but it still seems that there may be details that he hasn't shared...[/sblock]
[sblock=Magnus]"Ahh, the ring. You see, yes? Not the same.. but why?"

"Um, What?"[/sblock]
[sblock=RedBeardJim]the VonGravin family is not yet established... we're breakin' new ground here.[/sblock]

Mikara doesn't wait for a quill. She slides a dagger out of her belt and stirs her ale with it. Moving the blade to the tip of her midde finger, she makes a surgical incision, and blood begins to flow. After rubbing the dark red liquid into a thin film, she presses her middle finger into the parchment at the bottom of the contract leaving a perfect crimson finger print.

"If it's commitment you desire, I'll bite,
and trust that answers will come soon enough.
Your ring is safe if I have aught to say."

Mikara sips her ale and steps back, leaving the 'signed' contract, separated from the others, lying on the table.

Morvannon eyes the ranger with mild unease. "Yes, well...I'm afraid I do have some more questions. In particular, if you can wear that ring openly," he said, pointing at Reggie's signet, "why do you need to come to this neighborhood for help? From what I understand, your family could buy and sell this tavern and everyone in it without blinking."

Considering Reggie's response, Kamotz notes the lack of detail given Magnus after it was pointed out that "He knew not..."

He also jots down the waiver in Reggie's tone considering his wants and needs.
The contract designates the ring requirement. These fine Kamotz muses that these people are certainly finer than most on his native isle... people may walk in the Shadow for you Reggie, if you cannot express your wants and needs to them, who can you? Tell us your wants, Reggie. How else can we be sure to achieve them if opportunity presents? We are professionals, we can strive to achieve both, but will fill our contract.

Does Lady Fair, still own your heart?

Kamotz knows building trust is necessary, or at minimum creates comfort for those on the verge of some climactic moment. Reggie, seems distraught, a little comfort should do him well.

[sblock=If Reggie doesn't elaborate on the girl]What was she like Reggie? In the spirit of minimizing surprises, what are her secrets? I am discreet, I shall even sign contracts of nondisclosure, but I simply must know for my records.[/sblock]

[sblock=If Reggie has not made full disclosure with Kamotz]
Kamotz stands and address' the room of adventurers at large, Someone, who is better at calming the nerves of such a fragile man, should see if they can sort through this apparent haze of grief, and find the morsel of truth Reggie hides from me. Kamotz levels his gaze on ReggieI try not to offend Reggie, however I can't let these people traipse into a forest of panther, without knowing there are venomous snakes... He looks the group over, worried someone may take offense at Reggie's omission. Letting his gaze linger on The Emotionless One, who is called Tristan.
Kamotz sees a well contained explosion in Tristan, and wants to be there to watch the aftermath.[/sblock]

"Errr... very well, Good Elf. I trust the quality of your word, as you have bled for it... oh, which reminds me..." he pulls back his cloak once again to pull a free a satchel, which he commences to drop on the tabletop.

"No... no, certainly not. I fear my family was... No... she means nothing now."

"Very well. She was like a summer rain, flowing down from the heavens... she didn't just shower you in her Love... it was as if she meant to drown the world with it" He pauses to reflect, the shadow of a smile tracing across his lips. "She saw the best in others, and they treated her as a trusted friend..." he touches her cheek in the portrait, "I remember that as she posed for this, she chatted away with the artist as if they were old schoolchums... yet, they'd never met before that day. She was just like that..."
The faraway look leaves Reggie's eyes, "It was impossible not to fall in love with a woman like that... but I see now that I may have acted in haste. My feelings are not important in this matter. It is not necessary that Gwendolyn return... just the ring."

[sblock=OOC to all, but Morvannon]Make either a History or Streetwise check (with a +2 from Morvannon... also an additional +2 if you have training in both skills, and another +2 if you're from Bacarte)[/sblock]
All color drains from Reggie's face. "I... I..." He starts looking left and right... looking at the door, as his breathing begins to increase visibly. "I... Well, I... Yes, I... ummm..." He stands, and promptly sits back down... hard. He knocks the wind out of himself, momentarily, from the impact, which seems to gel his thought process.

He makes a fist with his hand, and slams it down on the tabletop... the signet ring is now plainly visible to all. "This damn ring... I knew it would give me away... damn thing. Can't take it off... then they'd know... they'd know, and they'd come find me... get it together, Reg... you're starting to sound like that crazy dwarf..." He runs his fingers through his hair, smoothing it back... gathering himself. When he finishes, he places his hands palms down on the table, and looks at the group.

"You ask why I've come here for help? ...because I can't go to my family for it, and I was led to believe that this is where one goes to buy it."
