Dangerous Delves Preview 6: Goblins, Golem, Troll and Vecna!

The art reference was a Dragon cover. The color scheme was based more on the Miniatures Handbook art. Sorry everybody hates it.
First of all, Logan, you surely don't need to apologize to anyone for it.

Back to the mini and the cover image, I think the source material is indeed awesome, but the sculptor misinterpreted WAR's pose (and to be frank, WAR's poses don't always translate well to 3D).

Here's a quick adjustment to the mini that makes it look more like the source image:

I'm a fan of DDM, but this had to be done (quick & dirty):
edit: I really like Klaus's re-take.
re-edit: I'm also saddened by a lot of the cartoony-looking figures in the last few sets (dire bear mauler, gnoll demon adept, trog brute & curse chanter, chain golem, galeb duhr to name a few)

That certainly better Klaus, but it still looks feminine to me.

How about a Githyanki Witch Queen?
There are two things that make it look too feminine: the accented waist and the talismans forming a bra. That could've been sidestepped by giving Vecna at least a loose vest/robe. But I wanted to keep as much of the original mini as possible.

I don't so much "hate" it as "find it amusing," in the same way someone stubbing their toe or a piece of scenery falling down during a play can be amusing. On the plus side, it will make all the other figures look better by comparison.

Her name was Vecna, she was a showgirl!

This set is not looking good at all. I can see myself getting the githyanki, the githzerai, and the drow as singles, and that's pretty much it.

Hmm, this time they went with a "wet and drippy" clay golem. i think it is an interesting choice that will give the golem multipurpose potential. Though the stone grey colour kind of works against it. A red, brown or yellow colour would would have said "wet clay" much more strongly IMHO.

of cource by going with neutral grey, they do reduce the chances for crude jokes. I doubt i am the only one who is already considering repainting this mini as a Golgothan:devil:.

All kidding aside I do like the beetle. Also the baby rage drake. And the goblin nodwick is real awesome.

As you pointed out, gray was the safe bet. Getting the right color of paint can be hit-or-miss, and we didn't want to risk a brown. I'm probably going to try a terra cotta repaint sometime.
