Ok, so what's the 2011 setting...?

But... What about an horror setting ? There is a lot of stuff about the Far Realms and its creeping invasion of reality in 4e. Mix that with the D&D super-heroic tradition, and you may have a setting where the PC belongs to various secret orders dedicated to defend/free the world from the abomination. It could be somewhat "WoDish", with the PC choosing factions (the various secret orders) that can bring them mecanical advantages and involve them in complex intrigues.
Ohhh nice. Yeah, my runner up guess would be something more horror like now. I like your idea. And I think you are right, they would probably favor Far Realm over undead for a horror setting.

If nothing else, this is a fun thread to speculate about interesting 4e settings from WotC or not!

...heh. Okay, I'm going to hedge my bets a little. I predict that the 2011 setting will be either a 4E original, or Blackmoor.

Blackmoor already exists.

My bet: Original setting or Spelljammer. I don't think the existence of one Spelljammer ship in the Manual of the Planes kills the possibility of that setting.

Of course, every new year takes us further from the release of FR and closer to the release of another "Quasi-Europe" setting - Greyhawk or Dragonlance.

Let's join forces : Ocean based, exotic, high action horror fantasy. But it should not be pulp like Eberron... So remove magic and monsters from everyday lives (no lightning road, ordinary people have never heard of aberrations, until it's too late...). But Heroes are a special brand, and they know the awful truth and must confront it on the seven sea.

Hopefully, something I'd consider buying.

Eberron and Dark Sun are two of my least favorite settings. To complete the trifecta, next year should be Ravenloft's turn.

You sure we're not clones of eachother?

Probably new. If not, I want Greyhawk. It has the best human gods and it has the Seldarine, what more do you want.

A small part of me wants Planescape just to see how badly they screw it up.

I would think that 2011 would almost certainly be a new setting, especially considering there are probably only four or five more years of settings before 5ed, although I wouldn't be surprised if WotC upped their one-a-year to two-a-year by 2012 or 2013, with a major release (as is now: campaign guide, player's guide, adventures) and a minor release (one book with all three in it).

As for the others...

Spelljammer - great idea, but too "weird" for mass consumption. I don't think we'll see this, at least not in 2011 or 2012, and then maybe more as a core book expansion ala Manual of the Planes and less as a campaign setting (e.g. "Manual of the Spheres").

Mystara, Greyhawk - too "vanilla", and also too old school.

Dragonlance - also too "vanilla," although less so than the above two. Even more so it seems to over-worked. They'd either have to go back to the original Chronicles era or go further in the future.

Ravenloft, Al-Qadim, Kara-Tur, Maztica - too specific. I wouldn't be surprised to eventually see an expansion book for FR, something like "Other Lands" that includes the latter three.

Birthright - too unpopular.

I would have liked to see Wizards take a slightly different route and release two settings a year, one major release--either a new setting or one of the big ones (FR, Eberron)--and a "D&D Classics" line (they could still do this), which would only be one book.

I am voting for an orginal setting as well. Right now they are currently trying to shoe-horn old settings with the new rules. I think if they develop a new setting, it will take advantage of the current rule set instead of handwaving the past and stating that "this how things are done now." Plus it could take advantage of all the new races they are currently developing instead of having weird anomolies (sp?) occur so that they can be accounted for. While I am a fan of Greyhawk and Ravenloft, etc, I would probably use more likely to use old books as campaign matterial since they are more detailed. Of course, it appears WotC's mind set has been to erase the past as much as possible, with the whole .pdf issue. But that's another hot button topic . . .

At next year's Gencon in 2010, there will be no new setting announced. They will announce that 5E will be released in 2011. :p

OH HELL YES!!!! I would buy this in an instant, and it could be the best setting ever generated for D&D. A horror setting without the cheese and patchwork weirdness of Ravenloft is long overdue. (And don't get me wrong, I loved playing in Ravenloft in 2e, it was just a bit jumbled to really pull me in). I'd love to see this new setting done at a more gothic/Renniasance level with primitive firearms, an inquisition, subversive cults, etc. WotC? Are you listening? ;)

Well the deep and dark oceans and the the things that live in it is perfect for Far Realms. Hell, just look at Lovecraft which is the major inspiration for Aberrations. A fair percentage of his stuff has connections to the oceans from Deep Ones to R'lyeh.
