STARGATE UNIVERSE # 9:Life/Season 1/2009

Heh, a thought just occurred to me. They should get one of the more creative people to write a play and enlist people to act in it. That would be a way to keep some of the more "useless" people busy and entertain the rest of the crew in the process.

Of course, this is assuming they have a lot of useless bodies floating around with little to do, and I'm not sure that's the case or not.

Heh....reminds me of the Gilligan's Island episode......

I think if she tries to take control, the scientists will tend to side with her. They don't trust the military, and they don't trust Rush.

Well, at the beginning of the episode they did. That's why I think that Wray deliberately told everyone; she turned the scientists against Rush and they're already against Young.

As for the military folks, the person she should be courting is Eli. They've already shown that of the scientists/civilians, the military folks trust him most of all. Obviously not all the military personnel are content to follow Young. However, who would lead them? Scott is too devoted to Young, so he's out. Greer is a hothead, and moreover likely to side with Rush, since they're both impulsive and willing to take risks. TJ might be a possibility, but she hasn't really shown any willingness to lead nor break ranks. So instead of having two factions, she'd have to a) remove Young altogether, and b) win over the soldiers' trust with Eli.

In that case, then Young should pretty much say that Eli's job is to assist Rush in getting the ship up and operational (since Rush doesn't want to work with the other scientists, and none of them seem to be able to grow a pair and put up with him). Then tell Wray and Scott that Eli's also there to check up on what Rush isn't telling everyone else; they're the only two besides Young who really need to know what Eli's doing.

However, I still say that shouldn't be taking up all of his time and that he should do some of the physical training with everyone else. First of all, being in better shape is good for his mind as well; so it can help him with learning what he needs to know, and to be more alert as to what Rush is doing. Second, he volunteers to visit some of the worlds they're going to, but he really does need to get into better shape, just look at how he was straggling when they were at the desert planet.

On the second point, I don't disagree. Obviously he should be exercising for any number of reasons.

However, if Eli's job is to monitor Rush, the problem is Rush has been shown to work ridiculous hours. Keeping in mind Eli is not as experienced as Rush, it's probably all Eli can do to keep up with him; especially if Rush is trying to be covert in some of his actions. If I recall correctly, Eli even said he barely caught the planet deception.

What Young should do is assign more people to go over the data. After all, Eli isn't the only scientist on board, by far. That way it gets done faster and possibly more reliably. Of course, that goes back to the point I made above - Eli is the one the soldiers trust. So that's not likely to happen. Unfortunately, Young can't afford to confine Rush either, since he's by far the expert on Ancient tech.

I get the impression you don't like the dentist. ;)
Hmm. My dentist doesn't strap me down on her chair. I hope I am not missing out on anything?

She doesn't need to replace Young. It might be enough to convince him a different command hierarchy would work better overall. Of course, that still means gathering support for herself.

Rush definitely cares more about his own goals than the others. If he was McKay, I suspect he would have already sat down on that chair. ;)

No, but I think it was established in the first episode that Rush and Eli are by far the most competent scientists when it comes to working with the Ancient technology. I think Rush would easily leave any other scientists in the dust. By the time they figured out anything underhanded he was doing it would be too late. Eli is the only chance Young has of keeping up with Rush.

Just kind of joking about how some people don't like the dentist. I tend to think in many strange and twisted ways; it helps me a lot when I'm DMing.

Yeah, I suspect the same thing. Stargate has always had a military vs. scientist theme going, kind of a throwback to classic American sci-fi I guess. There were elements of it in SG-1 with Jack and Daniel, and Atlantis played it for humor with McKay and Zelenka.

Here, it's more serious, because the scientists seem unwilling to follow orders, yet it was a Rush, a scientist, who's responsible for getting everyone into this mess. Also, because survival is still very much an issue here, people can't really go and do whatever they feel like, because it can endanger everyone's survival, so you need people who are giving orders and everyone else needs to obey.

I don't think Wray needs to pull a coup, because having some shared authority with Young would be just as good. The two of them have already worked together in previous episodes on things like assigning tasks and stuff.

Rush definitely cares more about his own goals than the others. If he was McKay, I suspect he would have already sat down on that chair. ;)

And I can hear Sheppard yelling, "Dammit, McKay!" again. :)

I don't know just how competant Eli is, but he's also the only one that Rush wants to work with. Rush doesn't seem to like the other scientists at all. Maybe the others aren't really all that knowledgable about Ancient tech either, but personality conflicts seems to be the bigger issue. And Eli really doesn't have any sort of speciality beyond whatever skills he has with mathematics, so he's kind of a blank slate, and he seems to be pretty interested in the Ancient tech too.

SG-1 also had Carter, who was a military scientist. Though having just watched through SG1 again, there was a lot of tension between the two groups.

I think personally, I use scientist and automatically associate civilian with it. That doesn't have to be the case though. I think it's more accurate to say that the scientists are a sub-group of the civilians.

Who was Greer with at the end of the episode? Was it one of the main cast?

That would appear to be Dr Lisa Park who has a thing for military men.

It'd be nice if they used some of the supporting casts' names more. I had to look it up as well.

Yes. And between the dark sets and gritty environment, it's hard to keep all of the supporting characters straight. I believe that Park was wearing the same bra in the first montage scene and in the last, with whichever soldier was in the first (I couldn't tell for sure) and with Greer in the closing montage. Plus she sweeps her hair back in the same motion in both brief scenes. I am guessing that the director purposefully did that to ensure that viewers would catch on. There's another scene where TJ is in the mess hall with Sgt Spencer (?) as he begins his withdrawals. That scene opens with Park walking out as another soldier enters (again, not sure which one), and he gives her a *big hello* as she coyly replies. I think the intimation is that she not only has relations with just those two soldiers but has a reputation and knows many soldiers. I'm expecting a subplot about STDs at some point.
