I've experienced D&D4

However, I urge you to compare your first game of 4e to one of my very early games of AD&D... where I played a 1st level magic-user with the single spell of shocking grasp.

Would have loved to. Unfortunately, our DM was playing by the rules... which state that initially, magic-users get *random* spells. (AD&D 1e DMG, page 39)
Heh, if he was playing by the rules, you would have had four spells to start with - Read Magic, plus one each of offensive, defensive, and miscellaneous. ;)

Well, yes, I had the spells in my spellbook - but the only spell worth memorizing was Shocking Grasp (and not much worthwhile at that. Yes, I could deal less damage than the fighter with less chance of hitting! :)))

Cheers!

I find it very sad that people think that playing one session of a game reveals to them the true nature of the game.
I don't understand. How often does a person have to punch himself in the crotch before he can make a valid decision that being crotch-punched isn't for him?

Does Bullgrit have to play 20 hours? 80? 150?

Does he have to let y'all vote on whether his DM was "good enough" for it to count when he says he didn't care for the game?

Maybe he has to play all the way to level 30 at least once?

What's he need to do for you to consider his opinion to be educated enough?

Of course, you went in to the game with your mind made up. I'm not sure any experience could change your mind if you had already decided what you had decided (that I won't repeat here).

Ah the standard you tried to hate it and didn't give it a fair shot. Really guys 4e is the only game I have ever seen that this convo looks like this

Player: I don't like how 4e reads
4E fan: Man you at lest need to play it before you say you dislike it
Player: played it didn't like it
4E fan: You went in trying to ahte it and didn't give it a shot, you need to play with a good 4e GM
player: Tried it again, didn't like it
4E fan, you need to play it to level 12 at lest give it more time.

It just goes on and on, always an reason why you need to give it more chances to like it. If a man reads a game and says he dislikes it thats fine with me. But if someone plays it and says the same thing , folks should take that as it's not his game style and drop it. But some folks have this thing with you MUST like 4e or you just tried to undermine it.

But at least you could start your car on a cold morning.

Could be once, could be more...

When I first started playing 3e I HATED the idea of an initiative order that wasn't rerolled each round... I houseruled it out, and made everyone role each round.

Some people convinced me to try it for a while though, and after a few sessions, I "got it."

But who knows.

As to the topic, I personally feel the game reminds me MORE of the game as it used to be when I started playing, then it has in a really long time, just with a lot of improvements.

So... to each his own!

:DL

Zero?

To play one session if he's going to talk about one session?

Or you mean educated enough to decide he has low interest in playing 4e?

Zero again.

I don't think that giving something a second shot is awful advice though; yikes.

In my opinion, zero.

Look I love 4e. I love 3.5, 3e, OWoD, NWoD, Traveller, Alternity, and the best RPG in the whole wide world: Paranoia XP. Seriously, I'm an RPG whore. I'll play anything 3 times.

In my time here, I've gathered that many people are not like me.

So here's what I have to say: If you read the rules to a game and they don't sound fun to you, you're probably right.

Bullgrit...

I think shifting your actual opinion to your blog has only proven a minor speedbump for those who feel that "someone is wrong on the internet", but let me say I share your feelings. At least you gave the game the old college try, eh?

Lets not give Bullgrit too hard of a time. I don't agree with his opinion, and tend to think that the sort of opinion he's expressing has more to do with the person than with the game (which is ok!), but I've read enough of his posts to know this much- he's not a liar or a troll. Vitriol should be reserved for the multitude who are not sincere in their criticism. I believe he believes what he says, and respect that.
