I've experienced D&D4

I don't mean that all 4e players think like that, but it is a very common theme I am seeing online. Reinforced in this very thread by more then one poster.
Again, that's not due to something inherent in 4E or its fans, but because 4E is the most recent edition of the game. You got the same things when 3E was new.

I agree it's not as bad as it was, nor as bad here as other places but I was here for 2e-3e and it was no were near this level. The fan base is not the same it was in 2000 and 3e was not in the same spot as 2e was. Nor is the 3e/4e changes like the 2e/3e changes but larger in scope.

All that together makes it a very different thing.

I think this site has gotten a lot more friendly recently. Most "edition war" threads end with: play whatever you like.

There is nothing inherently wrong with either edition. It was a big change from 3rd to 4th edition. The small change from 3.0 to 3.5 was invoking equal hate. You can´t please everyone is a lesson to be learned. Some changes wnt too far and some not far enough. Sometimes both at the same time. ;)

Some minor details can be changed as we did with ADnD. Character builder makes it harder to customize... but hey, we have a character builder, and a good one to be honest.

Does a wizard feel like a wizard of old? No, but a 3rd edition wizard also didn´t feel like an ADnD wizard... they just looked very similar... You could even have the same spells, but throwing a fireball in ADnD and in D&D or shooting magic missiles had a very different feeling.

A bard in ADnD (sorry for that) looked way better in 3rd edition, but was very bad compared to a bard of 2nd edition, because of equal level progression and the relative uselessness of lower level attack spells. In ADnD a first level spell could be as devastating as a 9th level spell... chromatic orb e.g.

so 3rd edition and 2nd edition had a different feel to it. I was much better in using 3rd edition as DM as i ever could handle 2nd edition because of unified mechanics and better measurement of combat capabilities of PCs and a very easy* to use CR system which easily allowed guessing how much a balanced party can take.

* the CR system worked very well with a single monster or many monsters... i don´t know why so many people didn´t get a grip how it should work.

this ain't D&D

Actually yeah, it is. Says so right on the cover and by the only people allowed to make that claim.

As far as the opinion parts of the post, meh. Everyone has likes and dislikes.

The game isn't perfect, but on the other hand you give a positive review of Munchin which means I, personally, am going to take your conclusions on a game with a huge grain of salt. It's not like my 4e books disappear because some people don't like it.
