4th ed artificer... like it or hate it?

Perhaps if we ever get an Arcane Power 2 they can leave out the swordmage entry and give more support to the artificier. That would be fair since they are not PHB classes.

Mechanically, they're fine.

Thematically, I struggle with them. They don't seem like "magical inventors" to me. "Summoning" inventions doesn't feel like what I'd imagine playing an arcane creator would feel like, and the temporary bonuses (and bonuses that key off of the artificer hitting) feel really artificial. It doesn't seem like they're creating anything, or binding any magic to items on any sort of regular basis.

Since themes trump mechanics for me, I've never been able to wrap my brain around playing one, since it just doesn't feel like a mechanical arcanist to me.

But mechanically, they're fine.

I wish they'd update the class though, also with no Daily item limits isn't their level 2 utility now useless as well as some of their PP features?

Same with the Cannith Mastermaker (dragonmarked PP). Maybe this would make a good submission to Dragon!

May you be struck down by a thousand bolts of lightning while being force-fed turkey-flavored jello through a bendy straw.

Because I suggested the Swordmage not being in Arcane Power 2? It would only be fair. You don't think they would actually increase the page count to accomodate both do you?

The Swordmage needs more support also. Why would you want them to leave any arcane class out, let alone a non-PHB 1/Essentials class?!?!?! The Swordmage rocks and is the defender that doesn't play "stand there like a wall". If

I would hope so but I have become jaded with how they do things at wotc

I don't use an artificer, but I'm interested. I feel that they are more of a role play kind of character. My personality is more bent to killing things.

I thought I could go with a kind of Victorian Steam Inventor with lots of little clock works and annoying wind ups.

Well, that's the beauty of this game we play. All you have to do to fix that issue is to SAY you've fixed the issue. Your character may carry a bag of parts that he hastily rifles through, finding just the right assembly for the job at hand and then summons an arcane spark to get it all going (IT'S ALIIIIVE!).
