How many RPGs do you play?

If you play a lot of different RPGs, how do you do it?

One issue is spending more time playing, but do you also do a lot of one offs or mini campaigns? Participate in conventions, game days, and store events?

I have dm the most current version of D&D for, well, lets say a long time. I have only occasionally played other games. One issue is that when I had more time, I used that time to...dm the most current version of D&D. Right now, if I say doubled my gaming time, I would be very interested in playing some other RPGs, but I could also see using that time to, well, you know, dm the most current version of D&D, or play it, or play a hobby game that is not an RPG.

Is it just me?

One day at a time, man. One day at a time.

My group previously played mostly D&D, plus occasional forays into WW's World of Darkness or Exalted.

We recently lost interest in D&D and have been trying lots of other things. In part, we do it by switching around who has to GM, so not everyone has to learn all the intricacies of every system.

Cheers, -- N

Currently...

GMing Pathfinder, Rules Cyclopedia D&D, and Vampire: The Requiem

Playing D&D 4E

In the past year...

Mutants & Masterminds 2nd Edition, Rifts, (New) World of Darkness, Changeling: The Lost, Vampire: The Masquerade, Wraith: The Oblivion, D&D 3.5, D20 Modern, Star Wars Saga Edition. a homebrew d6 based supers game, Shadowrun (Catalyst Games version)...I might be forgetting a couple.

So, a lot. :D

I found the definitions a little vague in this poll: What is meant by "play?" Games that are ongoing right now, or games I generally play?
Here's the definition I used when answering my own question: if you've played the game in the past and would be willing to play it again you play the game. Other definitions might be appropriate to.

In the last 12 months 4E, 3.5, homebrew, Ars Magica, Dark Heresy, WFRP--just off the top of my head. With Call of Cthulhu and d20 Apocalypse also staples. I'm pretty omnivorous.
I haven't played Dark Heresy, but I have played Deathwatch. The system the WH4K RPGs use is very elegant I think.

It depends. My old group was very open to the idea of "next week we're playing Legend of the Five Rings" or "hey Steve, can I run Call of Cthulhu in two weeks from now?" Multiple gaming days are a good source. For example, on Saturdays Susie might play D&D but on Thursdays, she Plays Shadowrun. Both me and my friends have done that.

That makes sense. I've certainly spent a lot of time playing the most current version of D&D. Some my openness to playing other systems comes from the anti-D&D sentiment that existed when I started playing in the late 90s. The World of Darkness was going strong and a lot of my friends that got me into playing D&D, got me into playing Vampire and Changeling. Thus, I played a lot of those while decrying how bad D&D was. Looking back on it, AD&D 2e, the current edition, wasn't that bad. I know that now, but I've kept my openness of playing other RPGs.

Is it just me?
Unlikely. More likely, you represent a large part of Wizard's audience.

A lot. Definitely a lot.

Most... no way. There are SO FREAKIN' MANY RPGs out these days, they must number in the thousands.

All... impossible.

Good way of numbering the poll, BTW. :D

Lets see, every week I run Castles and Crusades on Tuesday, starting this week I play HMb on Wed, Thursday I am running EPICrpg, Friday I play Eclipse Phase, Saturday I run Aces and Eights or play L5R 4E (we alternate). Every other Sunday I play in a Castles and Crusades game. The Thursday game is dedicated to playing a different RPG every 6 weeks or so, so thank to it I play 8 to 10 other RPG's per year. I have also ran Traveller at conventions, and played other games.

So I voted that I play a lot of RPG's.

As has been mentioned, it depends on the definition of "play". I voted A Lot, based on my usual gaming preferences (a campaign or two, and relatively frequent mini-campaigns and one shots). However, in the last year I have mostly played 4e D&D (three campaigns, one of which I run, and several one shots), along with short campaigns of Deadlands and Wild Talents, and a few one shot games, so the appropriate answer might have been A Few.

There are too many RPGs for me to play most, much less all, of them with my limited free time. Also, there are some RPGs that I just wouldn't be interested in.

At GenCon and other cons I deliberately try new game systems, and once a year I have a house-con where the only rule is "no D&D." It does wonders for expanding my horizons. I play D&D every week, so it's fun to change.

Same here. After 20 years of running D&D at Cons, my Con rule is "no D&D - I wanna try something else."
