Folding avengers into paladins and invokers into clerics would render classes menaingless. Each class has Role mechanics that give it a unique subrole on the battlefield.
Contrary to essentials design logic, it's not just wizards that get to do cool stuff, and avengers and invokers do cool stuff that is very different to what paladins and clerics do.
I mean you can even make an off-striker paladins, but they'll still play very differently to an avenger in that role.
It's not about character concept, it's about mechanics, and how the classes play. Character concept is abstract anyway, and as a recent wotc article points out, you can radically change the concept of a class anyway- the mechanics are what matters when designing a good class. Concept can come from any number of sources.
