• Previous access to a large collection (though this is no longer the case)
• Hoping for Legendary Encounters to get it's act together
• Shipping cost if I'm not buying in bulk
• Not knowing what secondary sites are reputable

I can understand your first two reasons. But the last two reasons puzzle me. It's not hard at all to find out about any secondary sites that are reputable. There are lots of them. People post here quite often asking about places where they can buy minis.

And as far as shipping cost, the more popular stores really don't charge much for shipping if you are within the United States. I have a flat $3.50 shipping rate for domestic shipping (adding a huge mini adds $1, adding 2 or more huge minis is $2). So at most, shipping would be $5.50 and that's only if you are buying some huge minis. Several stores have shipping rates similar (maybe even better) than mine. I suppose if you just wanted a $0.35 cent mini, then paying $3.50 to ship it would be pointless. But I don't know if people really want to buy just 1 cheap mini. Usually a person will pick up a few cheap minis. Then the shipping charge isn't that bad. Saves gas and a trip to the store.

Does anyone know how the metal minis lines like Reaper have been in business for so long? Don't they still come out with new miniatures? Do that many more people still buy metal minis over plastic painted ones?

Reaper is really the only original (old school) left form the metal wars. MANY people, even outside of RPGs, but metal knick-nacks, so a metal molded product industry still exists.

MANY people do still buy and paint their own miniatures whether they use them for gaming, just like to paint, etc.

They just announced new minis today that were released on the 10th the same time as new paints.

For a short summary of their history...

Metal minis never really died, jsut the giant flood of new gamers meant many weren't interested in taking care of them or painting them, so the pre-painted plastics took a fast foothold, but the metal minis fans are still there and still making purchases.

I think some "Iron something" company even got some of the old Ral Partha molds and will be making those again that they can legally. Doubtful to see D&D related ones though other than generic fantasy.

Then again, I paint my own*, and do play Warhammer as well, but most are RPG figures. Some of us know that the day you finish painting that last figure is the day that you die....

Dittoing...except the painting part. Despite my artistic inclinations, mini painting is not a strength.

I was never big on the pre-painted minis for our PCs, but as a DM I absolutely loved the monsters. At least Asylum Miniatures still has some new pre-painted plastics in the pipeline (or at least according to their Facebook page.)

I live all the way in the UK and Auggies and Troll and Toad's P&P are still very reasonable. RPG Locker's is even better(!) hence making three orders recently .

I'm sorry to see them go. Though I was only interested in some of the monster figs. I perfer to paint my own. I have been painting metal minis since AD&D first ed. I have figures from Citadel, Ral Partha, Reaper and others. It is not uncommon that I will role up a character to match a mini I have painted.
Lucky for me I live close to Games Plus. They have a great metal miniature section in the store to choose from.

I live in Australia, which is even further away, and I have ordered from Auggies and RPG Locker on a number of occasions. I found the shipping costs to be fairly reasonable. Having said that, I would normally make a small number of larger orders so that I minimised shipping costs.

I think the last set had an elder blue dragon, which was huge.

You are correct. It was the Huge Green and Huge Black (without tumour) that were the missing dragons.
