The King's Speech

It's nearly two hours of nothing but talk. It's a movie about people talking, and talking about talking, and talking about talking about talking, and the Duke of York having trouble talking, and people talking about the Duke of York having trouble talking, and Geoffrey Rush playing a speech therapist who is trying to help the Duke talk, and the Duke is played by Colin Firth who talks brilliant even when he doesn't, and then they talk. And it's fun. And heartwarming.

And it doesn't feel like two hours. And I wished it hadn't ended. Because it was wonderful. And if Geoffrey Rush, at least, doesn't win an Oscar for this the Academy is deaf.

Firth and Rush lead a great cast from top to bottom. The script has some problems regarding actual history but since those fumbled issues aren't really the focus of the movie I was able to set that side and enjoy this well acted Oscar contender.

It's definitely the frontrunner going into the last weeks before the Oscars. Not sure if Rush has a chance, but Colin Firth looks to be almost a shoo-in. I haven't seen it yet, but will do so soon.

 

[Plane Sailing]

I thought it was great. I loved the fact that they didn't feel the need to have music behind everything; the various uncomfortable silences were great - it was almost as though the film was designed to reflect the stammering problems of the king who it was about.

Cool film, well made.

I have to say that Bonham Carter really inhabited the role of the queen mother (as I've always known her). Very carefully observed.

That's a good point and might well be extended to the rest of the cast who all do a great job and pull no focus from the main two characters.
