"I don't mind if you only need a witness. Boredom is already present, and learning something about magic in the meantime is an appropiate use of my time."
"Well! I've never seen anyone like you before. Happy to have you, and I look forward to learning about your species as much as you do about my magic. Made of crystals, are you?" Rabbit leans forward to ping against one of the shardmind's angles with a fingernail, but then thinks better of it and withdraws his hand.
"What's your name? And do you know what stars were ascendant when you were, uh, 'born' I assume? Neither one is important to the ceremony, I'd just like to know. Oh, nevermind, someone else is here."
"I am a specialist in people sir, not the arcane. But I would be interested in coming to provide an 'Insight'." Karma remarked to Rabbit his sparkling green eyes focused hungrily on the drama that was unfolding with the ogre in the corner.
"Don't worry, no arcane knowledge is needed. No insight, either. You just need to watch. It's important for the magic that it's witnessed."
"That's four witnesses. Anyone else? Anyone? It's very important that we have five witnesses."
7 Rabbit looks around anxiously, but nothing is forthcoming. All of the adventurers that might be interested are forming up with the ogre, or paying more attention to the argument starting up by the door than to his words. He sighs, and turns to Artemis.
"I'm afraid you'll need to come up with one more witness on your own before we can continue..." he begins, when he's interrupted by a throat clearing from behind him.
"Ah'll go," says a sandy-haired human dressed in coveralls, who stands swaying next to a table. His friends grab at his arms to try and seat him, but he pulls away.
"No, ah want to go," he says, more firmly.
"Dun be a fool, Bob," calls another farmer from the other side of the table.
"That's 'venturer's business. Ye'll git yerself kilt!"
"Ah don't care!" insists the farmer.
"Ah want ta see sum MAGIC! All mah life ah've lived jes' down the road from Daunton, whit all dese 'venturers having 'ventures an' castin' spells an' fightin' monsturs an' such, an ah ain't YET seen any magic! Cousin Joe had a cow explode an' man-eatin' plants grow out all its cow pies, an' ah was in town at market an' ah misst it! An'en ah git back from market, an' ah find out that jest after ah lef'n town, a giant turtle pulls up with a whole gladiator arena on 'is back, an ah misst that too! An maw says ah kin't go back an' see it on account o'the harvest, an so ah has to stay home an work, an by the time ah goes back to Daunton it's gone agin. Well ah'm SICK of it, y'hear? Afore ah turn twenny, ah wanna see some MAGIC, an' ah reckon this is mah chance!"
Before he's even finished speaking, 7 Rabbit is standing beside him pumping his hand.
"That's the spirit, my boy! I promise you, magic you'll see! And don't worry," he tosses out to the table of muttering farmers.
"This is just a simple ritual of investiture. Bob doesn't have to do anything, just observe. We're not conjuring anything or transforming anything or blowing anything up. We're just calling down the spirits that live in the stars and binding them to a man's soul. Simple. No danger WHATsoever. Absolutely no danger, guaranteed." He smiles charmingly.
Farmer Bob belches and sags back into his seat. Rabbit looks at him in concern, as he turns back to his volunteers.
"Right, well. I need to get some sleep, and then Artemis and I have a lot of training to do. The rest of you, meet at midnight at Stargazer Hill. That's out in the woods, about a half hour's hike." He leans down and bellows into Bob's ear.
"YOU GOT THAT, BOB? STAR-GAZ-ER-HILL. GO NORTH, THEN... oh, hell, I'll draw you a map."
Rabbit makes sure everyone has copious directions and will be able to find the ceremony.
"All right? Everybody clear? Two weeks from today, at the dark of the moon, midnight, Stargazer Hill. The ritual can't go ahead without each and every one of you! Poor Artemis is counting on you to save his soul from a demon or somesuch! So don't be late!"
"Ah'll be there..." mutters Farmer Bob.
