Arcanis the Roleplaying Game Available for Preorder

Hello again Matrix,

Thanks. It sounds really cool, I must say.

Thanks!

How tied is it to the setting? I have my own home brew.

It is very tied to the setting, but should be easy enough to take what we give you and make your own adjustments. Arcanis, for example, doesn't have the cuddly Gnomes most gamers are familiar with. They are misshapen, grotesque creatures that are the result of a human and a dwarf (who happened to be Cursed by the Head of the Human Pantheon).

But the rules are flexible enough for you to create the more familiar version of gnome if you really wanted to. ;-)

Is magic 'dark'? Unreliable? Shunned?

Magic must be cast and if you pile on too many adaptions to the spell, it may fail.
We have a saying in Arcanis: "There are those who follow the Will of the gods and others who usurp it."

Divine magic or Cants are memorized by rote, thus they have very little wiggle room for manipulation or adaptions. And why should there be? These Cants are perfect as they were taught to the first priests by the Gods themselves.

Sorcerers/Magi usurp the Will of the Gods by pulling in the residual energy left over from the initial Act of Creation and mold it to their Will. Thus Arcane casters get to manipulate their spell more, but they are equally harder to cast. Besides they have the Harvesters of Ymandragore hunting them down and enslaving them for their Sorcerer-King and there's also the fact that channeling that much power will eventually kill you (the Wasting Death). Note: There's no actual mechanic for this- its just a role playing hook.

Is there fate/action point mechanics?

Yes we do have a FATE point system.

When will it be available in Europe (and in pdf)?
We are carried by all major distributors in the US, Canada and Europe, so you should see the book (depending on the shipping schedules of the European Distributors) sometime in late July? That would be my guess.

Edit: And what are the "Shattered Empires" product advertised on your webpage? How can a supplement be on sale when the core rules haven't been released yet??

I die a little inside every time I hear something like this.

My friend, Arcanis has been around since 2001. We're an Origins, Ennies Award Winning World Setting and have been running the Living Arcanis campaign for 7 years where we GAVE away over 150 full-fledged adventures.
In fact, we're GIVING AWAY - that's right FREE - the Codex Arcanis which is the de facto world Setting on our website as well as on RPGNow. Its a 256 page PDF, check it out.

Edit edit: Ah, for use with the quickstart, eh?

Nope see above.

I may have missed it, but are the Quick Launch rules available through your website? I could only find a news item saying to look for it at your FLGS.

I know. I actually bought the Arcanis for 3E back in the day. I just figured that the new product would be for the new system? Hence my question.

Thanks for the replies. Think I'll be keeping an eye out in late July :)

Good Morning, Vyvyan,

I may have missed it, but are the Quick Launch rules available through your website? I could only find a news item saying to look for it at your FLGS.

Thank you for taking the time to look into the Quicklaunch, which is unfortunately, no longer for sale. Allow me to explain.

The Quicklaunch (which was an error in naming on our part) is NOT the usual Quick Start rules that are given away. This was a 200+ page book that included the system (as it existed at that time) through Tier 1.

[As an aside, the system supports up to Tier 5 with 10 Ranks per Tier, so really it supports through Tier 5.9, I suppose.]

When we first released the book, it was made clear that it would have a shelf life of about a year, specifically for those playing CSE. The book was analogous to the Beta book (more or less) of Pathfinder.

With the imminent release of the full blown book, we didn't want new players and stores to be stuck with copies that would be obsolete in a few months, so we pulled the PDF and stopped selling to stores.

So that's the story on the ill-named Quicklaunch.

Best,

Hello again, Matrix,

Ah, excellent. I can't afford to lose many more pieces of my soul ;-)
But seriously, I'm glad you were aware of Arcanis from its 3E days and we appreciate your patronage!

Thanks for the replies. Think I'll be keeping an eye out in late July :)

No need to wait that long. You should be able to get a glimpse of things after FREE RPG DAY (or during if your local store participates).

Also, since I couldn't figure out how to embed the cover, here's the link:

Paradigm Concepts: Arcanis, Living Arcanis, Witch Hunter, Spycraft, and More!

Enjoy!

Best,

Hello everyone,

Let's see if I can get the image to work this time.

Cross your fingers!

If this works, you should see the cover to the Arcanis:World of Shattered Empires RPG with a fantastic art piece by Steve Argyle.

I saw it on your website. And it is a fantastic cover.

Now, for more questions:

FATE points? Tell me more, please. How do they work.

Are there "narrative/storytelling mechanisms" in the game?

Does it use exploding dice of some sort, or another "crazy s*** can potentially happen!" mechanism? (the equilvalent in 3.5 would be criticals)

Hello my Inquisitive friend,

Sorry for the delay in responding, but its been a busy day of "lawyering" today. ;-)

FATE points? Tell me more, please. How do they work.

They have a variety of uses from the standard re-roll a failed check or the avoid death I mentioned. One of the interesting rules we developed for Fate points is a Last Man Standing rule.

If you are the only person of your group still up, the other players may pool their Fate points and "give": them to that player (and they're gone, even if not used). That Player may now use those points, as well as ignore the "One Point per action" rule. This gives that "Last Stand" a very heroic feel and tends to avoid that TPK.

Are there "narrative/storytelling mechanisms" in the game?

Our adventures have instructions on awarding XP to those who role-play their way out of a situation, i.e. Avoid Combat when possible and for diplomatic solutions. However, there isn't a "mechanism" written per se'.

Does it use exploding dice of some sort, or another "crazy s*** can potentially happen!" mechanism? (the equivalent in 3.5 would be criticals)
Yes, if your Attribute die comes up with the max number it can roll, such as a 6 on a d6 or an 8 on a d8, then it explodes and you can re-roll THAT die only again.

If your Action Dice roll 'Double 00" then you have struck a critical blow. This means you not only do the normal damage, but your opponent also suffers a Wound.

As for crazy things, we can combine spells to create a brand new effect, as well as doing the same with Weapon Maneuvers.

Glad you liked the cover.

If you have any further questions, just let me know.

Best,
