Next came a phone call between games with him telling me there had to be some way to tell if the guy was a Wizard. I told him I'd think about it. He then started suggesting ways to use spellcraft rolls (which was what I had in mind) and when I told him I just needed to think about, he started telling me how if he were the DM he would find a way for someone to fulfill their character's backstory. This was followed by some serious whining.
<high-pitched nasal twang>The world just has to work the way I want it and anyone who says anything else is bad!</high-pitched nasal twang>

How I hate that attitude.

I once had player tell me I was doing it wrong […] He didn't come back to the next session.
Good riddance.

Afterwards, he whined for a solid few minutes that I was out to kill his character […] Needless to say, he isn't playing with us anymore.
A denial of reality type. Also good riddance.

Papillon is French for butterfly, and the name of Holger Carlsen's warhorse in Three Hearts and Three Lions.

If Holger Carlsen's warhorse was named Butterfly (in English), I'd think it was a lame name. If I was French and accustomed to hearing the word Papillon, then I'd probably think it was lame. But I don't speak French and Papillon sounds as common of a name to me as any other "fantasy" name.

I already said that I told the player she could use the french word for marshmallow. So it's no different in this case either. If using a word from another language will get yer socks off, as long as I am not reminded by the lame meaning by hearing the English version, I'm ok with that. I would find it petty, and as a player myself, I wouldn't be that petty over such a stupid thing.

I'm not really sure why people are trying to prove a point or get one over on me here (just like the player did by tricking me with the French word). I've already stated that I'm a crappy DM. What else do you want from me? :D

For language, I don't go by sounds. "Papillon" actually doesn't mean "butterfly," for instance, they both indicate the pretty winged insect that transforms from a caterpiller. Or to put it another way, when we see "ship" and "navis" one doesn't mean the other, they both should conjure in our mind the image of a dark shape with sails perhaps, moving across the water. That's the key to languages (I learned this from C. S. Lewis). ;) Do you also think Fonkin Hoddypeak is a lame name?

I wasn't going to say anything, but since so many people are ribbing you over the Marshmallow thing, I totally sympathize with your opinions on the issue.

I think if one of mine ever wanted to name their pet something silly like that, I'd warn them beforehand and then treat the pet like a pop-up clown. Hm, how many absurdly-named familiars can I kill in one campaign? ;)
