I'm sorry for your loss. As our family has two pets, a puppy and a 7-year old cat, who we hope will be with us for many years to come, I am reminded of the ephemeral nature of life. I wonder why we, knowing that we'll likely outlive our pets, include them in our lives and invite pain. For my part, I feel that the love and responsibility we have for our pets helps make us better, and I hope that your family feels that Tristan did that for you.

For myself, and with Tristan, that's simple - yes, I felt miserable yesterday, and I'm still sad today. But that's after a full decade of him making me, my wife, and the other cat happier.

Overall, it's still positive, and because for the most part humans aren't that great at remembering pain, in a little while mostly what'll come to mind will be the good stuff.
