New Marvel RPG!

I can't wait to see it, but I will be reflexively comparing it to my old TSR Marvel rulebooks, which are currently downloadable and free public domain. ;)

While they are available as free downloads, do not confuse that with being "public domain". They are still covered by copyright.

Actually... I don't think its really big of a news story since No Comic Book sites are talking about it yet (including Marvel.com!). Then again it took a while for there to be any discussion about DCA on some comic book websites.

There won't be. Tabletop gaming is as much of a blip on the comic book fan radar as comic books are to the Wall Street Journal.

Comic books and rpgs are both fringe-y nerdy pastimes with devoted fanbases without much overlap between those fanbases. Seems to me like a great opportunity to expand the hobby in that market.

Hopefully, they promote the game apopropriately.

Well...it's not the first licensed comic book hero game to come out. In fact, it's only the most recent of a pretty long list of them. I don't expect it'll have any more effect than DC Heroes, Marvel Saga, etc, etc.

I understand it's not the first one, and that the previous ones haven't accomplished much in terms of drawing attention or players between hobbies. Just because it hasn't been done doesn't mean it can't be done. Obviously, they think they can accomplish something here, and I hope they have some success.

I think I've played every Marvel game that's ever come out, so it'd probably be bad luck to break my streak now. But honestly, this sounds like it would be just about perfect for my Supers needs!

I find myself less-than-convinced that the format they seem to plan will result in a game I want to play. On the other hand, my one experience with Cortex was pretty cool.

We shall see.

My experience with the original Cortex system (in Serenity RPG) was painful - a system that broke utterly under the mild requirements we had for it. I can only hope the newer version of the system works better.

I would not recommend Serenity without Big Damned Heroes which
a) acts as errata/update
b) incorporates the series Firefly.

The "Classic" (pre-Cortex Plus) system, actually, got better with each subsequent release.

Cortex Plus, makes a couple of improvements. However, overall, I am not impressed with either implementation (i.e., Smallville and Leverage) (my impression of the latter is based, entirely, upon reading threads about the mechanics, a rules description for recreating Elliot's shootout in a warehouse, and the designer's Leverage hack for Supernatural).

Even with BDH (which I had), the system has some major problems with it that ruined it for us. I eventually basically ran the campaign systemless. In particular, what irritated me the most was the lack of a basic competence in checks. When you roll d12+d12 to do something, it's amazing how often you'll roll a 2.

It's sort of like the Hulk being unable to open a door whilst Rick Jones does it with ease... the system felt that random. And the random element was raised even higher by the addition of Story Points, which have a wackily minor effect, until the players worked out that the best way of using them was to spend them all at once.
