D&D 5E cancelled 5e announcement at Gencon??? Anyone know anything about this?

Then

First Post
As far as I know the source only told one person, Morrus. He on the other hand told all of us around him. I'm not sure people have to sign NDA to know about an announcement.
I didn't say they had to. Does make you wonder just how much of a lid was supposedly on this if every 'reliable in the know person' already knows, but only one person(wait another poster stepped up and said he has a source as well that confirms the info, confidential of course, we don't want these squealers to lose their jobs or anything) comes forward? So when did Morrus get the text? Before Saturday? After Saturday? After knowing that there was no 'announcement' why wait until Monday to even post a rumor, of all things, about it?
I've known Rodney for years way before he got hired at Wizards. He used to come to Origins every year and while I don't know him well enough to call a friend I have a lot of respect for him. It's because of that respect I will say he is not the source. I'd hate to see his name get drawn into this unfairly.

There are plenty of people I have no problem if people think they are the source of the rumor so I won't be eliminating just anyone that is guessed as the source. :D
Nah, I really don't care all that much about some supposed 5e announcement from people who aren't as important as they thought they were. But it does make for great 'drama. <popcorn>

heh... are you serious here?
...I mean...It seems you are
As serious as this supposed 'trustworthy reliable source' can be confirmed.

Think about it a second xech, how many people would even know about the planned announcement?

Figures! They're completely ignoring the old school crowd yet again by not including the ability to use 5E with an atomizer!

Bastards!

:p

I would not mind doing some atomizing on the 5E rumors.

But purely in the interest s of science. How many pieces can you blast a rumor into before it stops being a rumor?

Maybe the announcement was the planned release of 4eEe - 4th Edition Essentials Electronic (known as "FeEe" by the h4ters due to the claim of it being a money grab.) Physical books will be completely replaced by digital content using files that can only be viewed the special DDi reader. The slogan being "the books shall remain the same."

The announcement was cancelled because they have not yet worked out the smudging problem with PHB1, MM1, and DMG1. Also, several testers have reported that pages seemed to fall out of their Adventurer's Vault DDidf whenever they would click to turn a page. It's believed to be a problem with the pH balance and natural acid on the fingers of people when they click their mouse buttons.

As an added bonus, each new subscriber will be mailed a Ninja Cam. If the NC (Ninja Cam) detects actual physical books being used to play, it sends a signal to WoTC. A team of WoTC Ninjas will then arrive 1d4 days later to confiscate said books. In extreme cases, they'll go full on Farenheit 451 and bring flame throwers. There's a burning clause added to the DDi ToS which protects WoTC from any liability for damages resulting from flame throwers and/or ninjas.

I'll join in on the announcement speculation! The planes speculation is just Plan of Boring combined with Plane of Tedious. Almost makes me reconsider my love for Planescape.

Anyways.

This tweet went out before GenCon:

Wizards_DnD
(Mike) There's a GIANT @Gen_Con meeting happening right now. A "who's who" of #dnd superstars. We're talking about [REDACTED]. #dndgencon

I think that what Morrus heard jives with this. And I think that what could have been announced was a marketing drive to lead up to D&D that would have been called "The Quest for D&D".

This would be an open process, involving "dnd superstars" as well as "ordinary" fans (the real superstars maybe?). The goal would be to get down to it and try to figure out what D&D is, and what an edition that is both true to the old ideals but yet also takes into account the changing whims of the gaming community would look like.

It would be a two year project.

Someone then decided that it would lead to the Osborne Effect kicking in, and also that it would take down the Internet as a result of massive flamewars. It would also give people endless reasons to be mad at WotC, as the designers would have to put out different drafts of things they were working on and these would be shredded to pieces.

So, the announcement was cancelled, and they will instead start with an open playtest of the minis game.

EDIT: As for my credentials, I once posted a made up rumour of how the OGL would be structured just days before it was released, that was near spot on as I remember. (I did it to show that making up credible rumours is easy. It went straight to the front page of EN World, and I had to fess up and hang my head in shame). So, with that in mind consider my version 100% accurate. :)

Maybe they were also contemplating another setting search - or something like it.

Either way, i'd guess that the D&D Experience will have whatever announcement was supposed to be at gencon.

Morrus

Well, that was fun

If I had to guess, I'd go with the "something was going to be talked about, but probably not 5E" folks. That seems the most likely to me. I do think an announcement of some kind was cancelled (or delayed).

Seeing as how much of current day D&D relies on DDI it makes sense that future enhancements will need to be made with DDI - either new features, new content ready to be rolled out, etc. With the closer tie-in to software it is quite possible they were ready on all cylinders but the software development was not done in time and said announcement had to be delayed at the last minute.

Either way, we will know.
If it is 5e indeed we will say: "remember when Morrus..."
If it is something else but still important, then we will more or less say the same.
If it is nothing of interest then, shrug...

Sure, if they're looking for an excuse. But frankly, that's what's going on. People backlashed against 4e because they were angry about change. And then they found excuses and rationalisations for that anger.

Well, if you've made up your mind and can't be changed, I don't know what you're doing carrying on a conversation on a message board. It doesn't seem like you have much to gain, if you already know The Truth.

I'd like to ask, though: When did the 4e critics start kicking your puppy and dating your mom? Do you think that's why you have such anger at people who don't happen to like your favorite way to pretend to be a magical gumdrop elf?
