Even Newer(er) Tavern Thread: The Hanged Man

Vermitrax raised his gaze. Perhaps that girl was a good target. She seemed naive enough to embark on a dangerous quest. She also didn't seem to have overly developed morale, as to work with a necromancer, or not enough wits to actually know what a necromancer was. He couldn't lose anything by trying, now, could he?
Grabbing his gear, and leaving his empty table, he approaches Vanessa's one. "Greetings young one," he started. "Perhaps you'll honour me with permission to seat at your table?" he said, with his most diplomatic tone, and sported a brief and thin smile."I happen to be a stranger to this town, and meeting people and making contacts is in my best interest."

Vanessa takes her feet down off the table politely as the obvious wizard approaches. She eyes him appraisingly as he sits.

"Feel free to join use here at the socially challenged table my friend. Vermitrax, was it. I'm Vanessa. This is Howler, and Nave." She gestures to the half-orc and human seated with her.

Vanessa calls for a replacement bottle of common wine and a fresh snack platter to replace what her hungry companions have consumed.

"Please, eat, drink. I hope you enjoy commoners fare. I'm afraid it's all I can afford currently."

Howler pulls out a chair with one hand and slaps the seat. "We're all strangers here, and we could all use a few friends, especially the skinny one there." he gestures to Nave. "I gotta say, though, this is my kinda place. Starting to get weirder in here than the Clotted Headwound back home, and one time after a night there I woke up next to a medusa!"

Vermitrax shows a small smile, nodding a both. As Vanessa orders more wine and snacks, the wizard starts leaving his gear next to the table, and puts the dark and evil looking book on the table, which creaks under it's weight. "Of course my lady, I might have been used to more luxuries, but that belongs to the past."
As Howler gives him a chair, Vermitrax takes it with a quick move, common on who is used to be served. "Indeed, there's strength in numbers." agrees the mage, closing to the chair to the table. "A medusa? I've read that medusas are quite the voluptuous creatures. You are a lucky one, to have been able to step out of bed and remain in the flesh and not in the stone." After the maley male comment, the wizard eyes Nave for a moment. "I also, came from the Imperium when I was a child, but my master and I moved to the Living Island when I was only 8. So I consider myself a Kythrian." Grabing the simple glass of wine, Vermitrax spins it in his right hand. He gives a sip, and makes an approving face "What's the story behind you three then?"

Nave looks unsure as the newcomer approaches and begins to socialize with Vanessa and Howler. His interest pipes up when the man references The Imperium, and he butts in before the other two could answer his question about their situations.

"Ah, a fellow Imperium-goer! Since you've been here most of your live, and I've only been here naught but a few hours, could you please tell me how I could travel back to the glorious Imperium? You see, I... accidentally... was fooling around with some of the portals in the Magi District, and, long story short, I am now here, in this god-forsaken rat-hole of a tavern, socializing with these... strange, weird," Catching a glare from Vanessa that spoke to his mind like arrows into one's face, his tone changes slightly, but still has a masked hostility. "But otherwise righteous, friendly, and approachable people. So!" He seems to have startled nearby patrons with his very loud "So!". "How would one, a glorious one indeed, mind you, travel back to The Imperium from such a place as this?"

"I knew there was something I didn't like about him..."
Felix mutters under his breath. "Reminds me a bit too much of home. A bit surprised I didn't place the accent..."

Felix gingerly sets down a cup of tea in front of Drew. "Apologies from the barman. He got a bit distracted by the floor show."

He then sets down two more ales. One in front of Prime and the other at his own seat. "The fish and peppers should be out soon."

With that, he settles back into his seat. Smacking his lips and enjoying the bitter taste of the hops.

Vermitrax listened to Nave and took a few seconds to reply, drinking more off his glass " 'Fooling around with portals in the Magi District ' " he repeats, slowly, as to let the idea sinks. "I take you are no practitioner of the Art. Well, I'm afraid portals to the Imperium do not exist, or at least, not in Daunton. I came to these lands through a portal myself. But even for experienced wizards as my master is, stabilizing a portal to these realms is no easy task. We met a similar fate, with our forces trapped on the other side. I'm afraid I'm not able to help you." Vermitrax observes the anguish growing in Nave for a few seconds, before smiling. "But if you help me finding my master, I presume he could open the gates of time and space, to let you return to the Imperium. " he offers.

Vanessa smiles and rolls her eyes playfully at Howler's comment. "And I thought ladies night at the Bloated Boar was bad. (giggle)"

Vermitrax shows a small smile, nodding a both. Vanessa eyes the ominous looking tome respectfully.

"Well, I'll let the others sum up their own stories, as they're much more interesting than mine. I'm just a farm girl who decided to make her way to the big city. You know the story. Cows, sheep, corn, the McGregor brothers always fighting over who was going to marry me. It was all a little to much. So here I am. Been here in town a few months now. Waitress work is fine and all, but gads if I don't see some action soon I'll just die. I heard this place was good for finding work of a more active sort so I thought I'd drop by."

Nave looks unsure as the newcomer approaches and begins to socialize with Vanessa and Howler. His interest pipes up when the man references The Imperium, and he butts in before the other two could answer his question about their situations.

"How would one, a glorious one indeed, mind you, travel back to The Imperium from such a place as this?"

Vanessa grimaces at Nave and shakes her head disappointedly.

"Is it so bad here Sir Nave?" she adds a slightly breathless, husky undertone to her voice. "Surely not everything here has been entirely unpleasant?"

Vanessa flashes her intense green eyes in Nave's direction, clearly flirting but also clearly not serious.

"But if you help me finding my master, I presume he could open the gates of time and space, to let you return to the Imperium. " he offers.

Nave looks crestfallen as a massive metaphorical boulder falls in his way back to his old life. "Surely there must be some other way that would not require such efforts... And I shall find it! And, no thanks, the only master of mine is Zagreus and I need no help finding him." He replies, obviously misinterpreting what the helpful man said.

"Surely not everything here has been entirely unpleasant?"

Vanessa flashes her intense green eyes in Nave's direction, clearly flirting but also clearly not serious.

Picking up the gesture as more of a flirt than Vanessa probably had intended, Nave's unnerving confidence swings back to him, like a boomerang, causing the others much grief and annoyance. "Surely I did not mean that ALL of my company had been unpleasant... After all, I have most definitely enjoyed the time I have spent with you, such a fine, beautiful, stunning, and courageous woman." He winks at the Vanessa, sporting a very goofy, attempting-to-be-macho smirk.

"A farm girl?" Vermitrax said, only his stoicism allowed the rather disgust at the idea to not be shown in his features. "My lady, in places such as these, the sort of work you'll get is not nothing that a girl from a farm can handle. Not even a sturdy farmer. Could you hold a dying man in your hands? a partner, a friend that got slain by a creature, so utterly evil, that it's mere presence corrupts the heart of man? Could you claim a life with your own hands, at someone's command, just to fill your sacks with gold? See the life extinguish in the eyes of a dying person, is not something everyone is ready to behold. If you doubt your courage, or your resolve, you should stay here no further, for only death awaits those unprepared for the unrewarding life of an adventurer." so ended the grim and gloom speech of Vermitrax. After that, he glanced at Nave with a risen eyebrow. "I meant.... ehm... Fair enough."

"Looks like three castaways and a runaway, then. I shipwrecked here a few days ago. Been looking for my my usual work, but that didn't work out, so I was gonna keep my options open, but there's this...and anyway, I prefer the steady kind, so I came in here hoping to find someone willing to trade gold for muscle. You won't find better muscle'n me, well maybe that dragon, but I'm a sight more discreet."
