Player Wants to Play a Hawk

I don't think its that big of a deal, especially since everybody has flying mounts. If he chooses to fly places where the rest of the party can't, he's splitting the party, which is usually not a good idea.

Heroes of Feywild is rumored to have a pixie race that will have permanent flight, and that's due in November. You could make a tentative agreement on how the race will work, and at the same time let the player know that you plan to revisit the matter when you see how pixies work.

Since it's a water-world, tell him his character would be more powerful and important and special if he plays ... a flying fish! Talking and dancing extra at no charge!

I realize this is likely not all that helpful. But it just strikes me as a gimmick character who would better function as an NPC. But, as tastes vary, if you and your player want to try it and make it work, and not annoy or alienate the rest of the group, more power to you.

It's one of those days. We would actually be gaming today, if it weren't for this ***** Irene.

And I guess this player is a handful, in his own way.
There's one way to handle players like that. Knock prone.

Oh, I forgot to mention; he's a psionic hawk. As in, a psion perfectly capable of playing his tricks from the air.

Wait, are we talking about... EAGLE POWERS ?

The Dragon Magazine thread by (un)reason just reached Issue 244, which had a flying fish humanoid, and several other flyer races:

wow. I had no idea.

anyhow, I think the real gameplay issue is whether special Hawk PC will require special Hawk time that will take away from the others at the table. The way I see it, this is is a problem with a lot of special races, including but not limited to psion hawks, dolphin commandos, sentient bonsi trees and flying vampire unicorns.

Let him play a hawk, but stipulate that he can't leave his wizard behind. :p

That way, you get the classic wizard/familiar combo, but from the perspective of the familiar. ;)

Heh. If a PC in my fable game (they're all animals) summons a familiar, it's a human "spell-caster."
