September In the Works is up

The Dryad needs more power to protect her tree and her forest. There's a threat to her tree/forest and needs to go out and kill it. The Dryad is tasked by druids to gather wealth for their grove. The Dryad decides she wants an adventurer's, non-cowards death, as opposed to sitting scared at home (the tree, in this case.) The Dryad needs to find a place to relocate her tree. The Dryad needs to find a way to detach her spirit from the tree.

I hope the hamadryads aren't all girls. :p

Perhaps I should rephrase.

Since the dryad dies if the tree dies, isn't it a little... stupid to go out adventuring rather than stay with your tree?

I always thought dryads were the spirits of a type of trees (oaks in particular), while hamadryads were the spirits of single, specific trees (like the one in my backyard).

That's how I remember those Mythology courses going.

Let me put it this way:

Since a human dies if its body dies, isn't a little stupid to go out adventuring rather than to stay home?

I'd wager in many cases, a stationary tree is safer than the dryad's moving, adventuring body, anyway. The tree is only in danger if danger comes to it, but adventurers often go into danger whether or not danger is coming for them.

I mean, I'm sure as soon as people start playing dryads some jerk DM somewhere is going to kill one's tree out of spite, but that sort of "gotcha!" moment doesn't strike me as being any different, in spirit, than, "So, that ale was poisoned. Does 127 hit your Fort? Yeah, you die."

I've often heard folks voice that they want the capability to have 0th level characters in 4E to allow roleplaying the characters before they have become adventurers. The article mentions a 0th-level adventure in Dungeon, so maybe it will help sate this desire.

The 0th level Dungeon is actually a counterpart to a Dragon article for this month: "A Hero’s Choice: Level 0 Rules."

No idea how the mechanics will work, but yeah, pretty clearly aimed at addressing those who have asked for such things. :)
