Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

I'm kinda on the other side of the fence. From the video game company's point of view, used games aren't any different than piracy, well except that someone else is getting paid for it. I've stopped buying from GameStop and other retailers that sell used. I'd rather give money to the guys that made the game over seeing all go to the retailer.

As long as I don't have to pay anything extra to play a new game, I don't have a problem with this.

Edit: I agree with the article though. Don't retroactively make used games already bought unusable without a pass. That isn't fair to those that have the games. But to announce it ahead of time?

I look forward to games being published in a direct-to-download method (much like XBL games now), where the creators can self-publish, with a fee to the console company and leave the blood-sucking middlemen out of it completely.

They can't have it both ways. Either a game that you buy is your property to do with as you wish once you've bought it, including lending it to a friend, copying it, or selling it......or it's not your property, and you just have a license to use the software....in which case they have a legal obligation to use that software.....thus, if your DVD is scratched or otherwise damaged, they have to replace it so you can continue using the software you've paid for the right to use.

Otherwise, they're just being abusive.

Nobody prevents you from selling your house, your car, your fridge, your dog, your computer, your camera, or any other product that you've bought and paid for. Why should they prevent you from selling your software? If you are no longer using it...

Besides, if they truly think this will increase sales, they're fools. How many consumers buy *more* new games, because they know they can sell them used once done with them, and then use that money to buy more new games? I know lots of guys who do that...they buy new games, play them, then sell them for maybe 40% what they spent on them, and turn around and buy brand new games with that money. If the market for used games was shut down by this policy, they couldn't sell those used games.....and thus wouldn't buy as many new ones.

No one's stopping anyone from selling or buying anything. They just create incentive to buy new. I'm not sure that there are any games that are unplayable when bought used, are there any?

They're not stopping anyone from selling or buying.....*yet*....but they *are* doing this like this particular restriction, and others, like having it so multiplayer doesn't work on used copies of the game, unless you pay a fee directly to the publisher/developer etc.

Further, it's a bit of a slippery slope. They're trying to get consumers used to this idea, so they can start to implement even stricter measures.

Have you read the articles talking about predictions from consultants that the next XBox will have some technology in it that will prevent used games from working?

Yes, and like I say, it doesn't bother me. Everyone has the right to do what they want. If it bothers anyone enough, then they should certainly vote with their wallet. I was just stating the other side, and that if one enjoys video games, it's a good idea to support the industry.

The days of physical media games are coming to a close. As much as I hate to see it happen, in another 6-10 years we'll either be downloading directly or streaming from dedicated servers. My two year old son will point and laugh at me when he's 12 and hears stories about how I used to go to a "store" and buy game discs and then drive all the way home and then install them. Never mind discussion of "cartridges" or 5.5" floppy disks.

But even with the absence of physical discs...I'd be shocked if prices and add-on sales don't just keep on ticking up until we are paying upwards of (current value) $100 for what we spend $60 now. All through exciting stuff they will offer that we have to purchase in order to enjoy the game in its full entirety (whether its character options, unlocking the end of the game, etc).

However, much like Banshee16 has mentioned, it does not mean that we have to go gentle into that good night. And the best way to do that is to vote with your wallet :-) Even if the end result is that we all get screwed out of more money in order to enjoy awesome video games.

Life's tough for an old nerd these days I tell ya :-)

Not true. If I go buy a copy of Rock Band it comes with a code I enter on Xbox live to download an extra pack of songs. Later on if I want to sell or give away my copy of Rock Band to a friend there is no way for me to transfer those songs.

Thus I am being stopped from selling or giving away for free something I own and have paid for.

The slippery slope is going to be just how much each studio include in the envelope of things you can't transfer because you downloaded it.

Another example....if I buy Fallout 3 and all the DLC as it comes out, all I can sell or give away is the base game. If I wait and buy Fallout 3 GOTY edition with all the content on the disc I can sell or give away the whole pie.

At some point people have to put their foot down and say no more or eventually EVERYTHING is going to be "Buy once and never be able to sell" if publishers can get away with it...including music, games, programs, and electronic books.

DS

PS Sorry to derail the thread....the game really did seem fun.

So you can't sell DLC? That's like saying you can't sell your iTunes songs or Steam games. Not really what I was asking, because that's obvious.

By the way, why are people not mad that they can't sell those things?

Well, in 1981, Pac-Man for the Atari 2600 cost $40. Really, the price of new games should probably be higher than they are, much higher. Instead, they're just getting shorter and not as good. :(

I think this side-track of the evils of the video game industry and market analysis has trampled this poor thread ;-) I think everyone has valid points, and we all get cookies -or- ham.

I am going to step aside and attempt to steer this puppy back onto the rails.

Anyone else played Kingdoms of Amalur yet?
