I'm kinda on the other side of the fence. From the video game company's point of view, used games aren't any different than piracy, well except that someone else is getting paid for it. I've stopped buying from GameStop and other retailers that sell used. I'd rather give money to the guys that made the game over seeing all go to the retailer.
As long as I don't have to pay anything extra to play a new game, I don't have a problem with this.
Edit: I agree with the article though. Don't retroactively make used games already bought unusable without a pass. That isn't fair to those that have the games. But to announce it ahead of time?
I look forward to games being published in a direct-to-download method (much like XBL games now), where the creators can self-publish, with a fee to the console company and leave the blood-sucking middlemen out of it completely.
They can't have it both ways. Either a game that you buy is your property to do with as you wish once you've bought it, including lending it to a friend, copying it, or selling it......or it's not your property, and you just have a license to use the software....in which case they have a legal obligation to use that software.....thus, if your DVD is scratched or otherwise damaged, they have to replace it so you can continue using the software you've paid for the right to use.
Otherwise, they're just being abusive.
Nobody prevents you from selling your house, your car, your fridge, your dog, your computer, your camera, or any other product that you've bought and paid for. Why should they prevent you from selling your software? If you are no longer using it...
Besides, if they truly think this will increase sales, they're fools. How many consumers buy *more* new games, because they know they can sell them used once done with them, and then use that money to buy more new games? I know lots of guys who do that...they buy new games, play them, then sell them for maybe 40% what they spent on them, and turn around and buy brand new games with that money. If the market for used games was shut down by this policy, they couldn't sell those used games.....and thus wouldn't buy as many new ones.
