D&D 5E I hope this isn't 5E...(art that screams "not this, not this!")

Psychological imprinting explains a lot. I really started with 2e, and it still resonates well with me. Dykstra...I like his artwork, but it never quite clicked as D&D. Elmore is fine, but seriously cheesecake. Wayne Reynolds is -fantastic-. Not "realistic", but fantastic. I'll be happy if I never see another Baxa monster in my life. He single-handedly killed Dark Sun for me. The faces in japanese art (ie anime) throw me off every single time. I'm sorry, but no matter how great the rest of the picture is, pointy-little chins and bizarro eyes don't work for me.

And I kinda liked the blue art in 2e. It was different. :)

Here is some Japanese fantasy art that ranges from the more subtle to the full on stereotype of anime art.

That is, of course, just the tip of the iceberg, there are a huge ranges of styles in what is considered anime, the important point is that pretty much none of what has been produced for D&D looks remotely like any of it.

To me it does look like anime, and not only remotely. But to me anime is just bad anatomical drawings most of the time (eyes like ugly owls, ears to big, limbs too long...).

Japanese comic style, western comic style... the latter has become more and more unreal, too.

In any case I didn't realise how many prudes play D&D. Or are you just making an attempt at standing up for women's rights? My wife would have an interesting discussion with you about that. Here is the image she chose for her elf ranger character:

That's not only unrealistic (what ranger would wear that? :erm:) but way too porn for me to allow that at my table. Kind of disgusting actually. If your GM allows that... well that's not a group I'd want to play in.

Possibly, but I suspect an equally likely reason for the prevalence of 'sexy pc portraits' is that almost all females in fantasy art are depicted in sexy, underclad, eroticized positions. The pics that female gamers use are limited to the pics available of female characters; if 90% of those pics sexualize them, most women aren't going to have a lot of choices for a picture that even slightly resembles their pc that isn't eroticized.

Exactly. I had to photoshop pictures a lot because I like my characters realistically dressed and with boobs not making her keel over and fall flat on the face. Sheesh.

I'm the GM. She's my wife. I don't allow or disallow her anything.

As for realism ... errr ... who cares? You realise D&D isn't real, right?

And don't worry about not wanting to play at a table with folks so lacking in morals ... you wouldn't be invited.

You came into this looking for a fight, posting the picture because you knew some people would find it inappropriate. Enough with the hostility. - Piratecat

I'm frankly not sure how you could look through the galleries I linked and then look at WAR's work, or pretty much any D&D artist's work, and think that they share the same aesthetic DNA.

I care. Obviously. Maybe you are suggesting that I am nobody, but I assure you, about everyone I met around here think the same way. The same way I don't want objects falling towards the sky (unless magic is involved) the same way I don't want PCs wearing nonsense clothing... or lack thereof. It may be plausible that a tribe wears nothing at all, but not...that.

Making it realistic within the given parameters seems to be an important thing for a lot of players. Even if we did not have children at our games, I wouldn't want a porn style game.
