D&D 5E I hope this isn't 5E...(art that screams "not this, not this!")

Well, fair enough I suppose. I was going more by the title of the thread -art I hope isn't 5e. I, for one, could do without Alfred E Newman as a monster and bad Elric ripoffs. I mean, if you're going to steal someone's material, at least do a good job of it.

And, here's some more. I do wish the 4e galleries weren't behind the paywall, cause there's some comedy gold lying around there.

OTOH, we have this lovely lady from Red Hand of Doom. Wow, just ... wow

It's Mullet Rock in D&D:

And another in the, "Really? You paid someone for this?" category:

Lastly, a good 4e shot of what I don't want to see. Yes, I know it's a fantasy game, but, sheesh.

I have no problems with variety. I even like the idea of mixing different styles as well - some full color, some inks, not a problem.

But, seriously? Any of the images I showed would even remotely be considered good? Those are just ugly.

I'm quite fond of the thought eater. I actually think it's a very solid illustration, it's weird, seems non-threatening at first blush, maybe even a little goofy, but the undertones of its dessicated appearance adds a note of subtle wrongness.

Let's do some side by side comparisons of different versions (some non-official, but still cool) of our psychic skeleton platypus:

Now, I totally agree that WOTC's last one is a completely different monster. But, even if you are going to stick with skeletal psychic playpus, there are MUCH better drawings to be how out there.

You're getting into a pretty subjective area. The only one of those I would rate on par with the original is the Wojcik illustration (I especially like the brains as a stomach from a conceptual design standpoint), for me it's a toss between color and B&W. The second one is just lacks all the whimsy and personality of the original. The WotC one is cool, but again it throws whimsy out the window, they just decided to make a new creature and I pretty much consider that a failure of imagination. In short, I simply can't agree with you.

[edit: Besides that point here isn't that you may or may not be able to find better illustrations, it's that the original one is not a bad illustration and, in fact, does its job admirably.]

BTW, I totally agree with you on the WOTC one. Wish they had just made a new monster.

OTOH, the goofy smile skeleton platypus just is not doing anything for me. This creature looks ridiculous and I cannot take it seriously. I look at it and think, wow, this is the scary ethereal creature that eats my brain? Really?

But, I do agree that it's totally subjective. You like it, I don't. Neither one of us is right or wrong here.

About absurdly long elven ears...blame Izubuchi Yutaka, who drawn elven(I mean, Deedlit's) ears wrong way ;)
Yutaka Izubuchi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Well, I don't know his influence in non-Japanese fantasy art. But at least in Japan, Deedlit's ears are the reason why elven ears are depicted so ridiculously long.
(Somewhere I read he drwan her ears like antenna of robot.)

And just I want to show original character sheets of some characters from Record of Lodoss War.

My wife always claimed Deedlit was a twit. I think she had hidden depth.

On topic...the ears were a little long, expecially on some of those dark elves.

This again?

This is "Anime D&D":
Ok Claudio, my opinion is wrong...

It's anime. The giant sword is anime. The hair cut is anime. It's barbarian D&D-esque version of Cloud from FF7. Same sword, same hair, same stance.

As the OP says. I hope this isn't 5E.

You know how Final Fantasy VII was a video game, and not an anime*, right? And the character designer was Tetsua Nomura who hasn't worked on a single anime in his life? "It's anime because it looks like this character who's not from an anime." is a terrible argument. The entire cultural output of Japan is not anime.

*Well, there was eventually a one-episode OVA, but that barely counts, and actually tones the character design down.
