D&D 5E How well can you make your favourite character?

There is no ranger, no sorcerer, and no multi-classing. None of my favorite character themes canbe remotely done yet.

Half-elf fighter/mage (melee fighter, generalist mage)

Can't do it yet. It will be the multi-classing rules that come out in a packet or two (I'm guessing it will be another 2 packets) that will let me know how well he can be built. It's probably going to require a lot of feedback and 2-4 multi-classing rules revisions, but I'm hopeful it will be possible. If not, I'll houserule it.

Well, my favorite character is a strong 4E Defender with a lot depth. 5E only allows me to play a second rate(compared to 4E) Defender with zero depth.

The answer is not at all.

When you say "depth" do you mean backstory, personality, character nuances, etc.? It seems like those things are divorced from rules mechanics and should be replicated across systems easily enough.

My favorite character was a halfling (hin) ranger who rode a wolf and used a bow. Currently impossible (lacking the class; I suppose I could use Rogue or Fighter for now) but also suboptimal (the character used a longsword as a 2h weapon and a bow in that edition of D&D did the same damage as a longbow; the only difference was range). Because he's a halfling he's pidgeonholed into using slings and shortswords or sucking with a shortbow compared to any random elf doing almost twice as much damage with a longsword and longbow.

Tactical differences?

Those from 4E who complain about next all seem to be missing tactical elements, especially the role abilities. At the same time, many non-4E players want away from exactly that. Some kind of conflict is inevitable. My thought is that some of 4E boardgame-ish structure might make it into Next as one (or several) rules modules.
