OK I asked him your questions, and he almost immediately replied.

1) Q: You mentioned invocations are always based on abilities or traits. What does this mean?

A: some of them (not all) improve other abilities. One of mine boosted damage for eldritch blast.

2) Q: Since Warlocks regain spells after a short rest, how does multiclassing with mage work?

A: two separate pools of magic - the you'd have X wizard slots, Y warlock ones, get warlock ones back with short rest

Actually, you hit 5th around 10th, then 6th at 20th. That fits in with our spell design - 6th level = big power boost
In terms of numbers, my warlock will have 2 spell slots from 2nd level until I reach 11th level. Tops out at 4 at 17th.

My interpretation: Warlocks will have two spell slots, total, between the (caster) levels of 2 and 11. As you progress, they will become two 2nd-level spell slots, then two 3rd-level spell slots, and so on. Around 10th level, they become two 5th-level spell slots. Only after that do you actually start getting more slots.

I thought short rests were optional? Or maybe that was merely restoration of hit points after a short rest being optional. Admittedly, I haven't followed 5e much lately.

I am not sure how Short Rests could be optional. Now there may be options to change how long a Short Rest will be, since an hour long Short Rest doesn't seem to be very short. And in 4e Short Rests were 5 minutes, and not actually needed to recover encounter powers but rather to heal using Surges.

In Next Short Rests were 10 minutes, which was a bit long but not too unreasonable. Then they changed it to an hour. Either way a Short Rest must be taken to spend a Hit Die, or more, to heal.

But a Short Rest is also required to regain uses of encounter resources for Bard, kind of,though that is only 10 minutes rather than a Short Rest to recover their Performance; Cleric for Channel Divinity; Druid for Wild Shape; Fighter for Second Wind, Action Surge and if a Weaponmaster then Combat Superiority dice as well; even the Mage needs at least one throughout the day to use Arcane Recovery to get a spell slot or a couple back after using them; Monk for Ki points; Paladin also has Channel Divinity; the Rogue only seems to get one Short Rest requiring ability in Ace in the Hole at level 20.

Pretty sure the Ranger is the only one without a per Short Rest ability, though the Mage can pretty much ignore theirs unless they are running out of daily slots.

Mainly storywise, it just add headaches to my game, I like heroic fantasy, having a warlock that is bind to the nine hells or something won't easily fit, otoh In a game dedicated to it and built around the warlock can be a very very nice option.

Mistwell if you are still asking Mearls questions about the Warlock can you ask how many Invocations the Warlock gets as they level? And if they have higher level invocations or if all invocation choices are available at 1st level.
