Also that dwarf art is pretty slick!

I was debating starting a different thread to discuss about the dwarf art.

I really like it. Solid work. There is a weight about him. And I enjoy the small details--the axe in his boot, the skull on the end of the maul, the strand of hair that's out of place, etc.

Thaumaturge.

No helm, and a 65 pound warhammer? I guess our "What D&D should learn from a Song of Ice and Fire" thread went unheard.

Unlike the art, some of the things Mr. Mearls had to say were really great:

However, we see the fifth edition rules as a game that we want to stick with for the long haul. . .If you’re buying new books, it should be because you want to—not because we’re twisting your arm.

That would be fantastic if WotC found a way to just let the 5E rules stand. For a decade. Or longer. But I'm afraid a D&D "long haul" is actually closer to 5 years.

The latter part of the quote reminds me of the book release plan from 3E: setting books, Complete books, Races of books, more Monster Manuals. Which is cool: some of those books were phenomenal. But a lot of them took things too far: like Prestige (broken) classes becoming the norm, instead of the exception. So I hope 5E can produce the books we want to buy, without sprawling the game as well.

See you at the Basic Game download queue.

Definitely agreed.

It does make me think "I hope those potion bottles are unbreakable", though! Otherwise I know one dwarf who is risking a roll on the potion miscibility table at some time soon. 1% chance of a 6d10 (force) magical explosion!

They believe in the playtest->survey->rule iteration model enough they built an entire edition on it.

It seems logical that they believe in the same model enough to maintain said edition once it's released.

Thaumaturge.

I fully expect we'll be "playtesting" the psionic rules a year before the psionic handbook comes out, for example.

At this point I'd be surprised and disappointed if we weren't.

Thaumaturge.

Also, it turns out one can give out too much xp in a 24 hour period. Huh.

Sounds to me a lot like the way MMOs adjust their rules after play begins. Mind you, this may be a good thing.

Also, why do I feel like I already have that dwarf in my miniatures collection? Does he seem familiar to any one else?

Helmless dwarves with hammers aren't exactly groundbreaking. (Well, they could be, I guess...)

But I think you're thinking of

I think you will see patterns, such as daggers are virtually never used by rogues in 5th edition, for example. There is no mechanical reason to ever use a dagger instead of a shortsword...
Not true. The dagger is the only finesse weapon which can be used both in melee and at range. If you're picking feats to specialize in a single weapon, the dagger is an excellent choice--you get to use your specialist feats for both melee and ranged attacks. At higher levels your weapon damage die becomes much less important than your Sneak Attack dice, so using a d4 won't cripple you.

Nor is this new to 5E. The dagger has never been a strong choice for primary weapon unless you went out of your way to specialize*. For non-specialists, it's a holdout weapon, something you stick in your boot in case you're captured or disarmed. Its main virtue is ease of concealment.

*Or if you were a Small-sized dual wielder in 3E, pre-3.5. But then 3.5E came out and you got weapon shrinkage...
