D&D 5E Complete Basic Game

Thought this thread was going to be about a free 13th age basic edition released as a competition to dnd next, lol. Stupid tags :)

My thought/hope as well. I've been meaning to check 13th Age out, and was hoping this might've been a way to do so. Oh well.

Yeah, you might want to make sure the blogger has his or her facts straight. :)

There are good bloggers and then there are those that like to disseminate misinformation (intentionally or not, I'm afraid that makes one a bad blogger).

Well, there is an SRD. So it can be checked out, but it really loses a lot without the book's excellent writing style and the art.

That's cool. Much better, then.

I'm still a bit frustrated, as I have more time over the summer to game. If I don't have something going by mid- to late August, it probably won't have the momentum to continue. I guess that's a good argument to shell out some cash on the Starter Set, though.

Oh, and I don't know why I didn't think of this until Morrus tweeted it, seeing as I picked up Legacy of the Crystal Shard last week (my game takes place in Silver Marches, so info on Icewind Dale is quite useful).

Anyway, here's the 5e encounter list for the adventure with a list of low level monsters.

I think the Basic Rules PDF is actually far more than what the FFaW (Fine Folks at Wizards) had promised us for this first release. Hadn't they announced that the July PDF would contain character creation rules and level-up info for levels 1-20?

I looked at the monster stats from LotCS and they seem weaker than I'd expect having seen the Hobgoblin and having watched the Live Play session. EG:

Goblin [sblock]
Small Humanoid (Goblinoid)
Armor Class 13 (leather, shield)
Hit Points 3 (1d6)
Speed 30 ft.
Senses darkvision 60 ft.
Str 8 (–1) Dex 11 (+0) Con 10 (+0)
Int 10 (+0) Wis 9 (–1) Cha 8 (–1)
Alignment neutral evil
Languages Common, Goblin
Traits
Stealthy +5: The goblin gains a +5 bonus to all ability checks
to avoid detection.
Actions
Melee Attack—Mace: +1 to hit (reach 5 ft.; one creature). Hit: 2
(1d6 – 1) bludgeoning damage (minimum 1 damage).
Ranged Attack—Shortbow: +2 to hit (range 80 ft./320 ft.; one
creature). Hit: 3 (1d6) piercing damage.
Encounter Building
Level 1 XP 10[/sblock]
3hp? Seems VERY squishy especially since, in the Starter Set Live play it took about 5-7 damage to drop those Goblins.
I'm thinking monsters may have changed since Legend was published.

Yeah, someone with a str. 14 or better could punch a goblin to death. I guess that is why they have a bonus to stealth. It is in their interests to avoid a fight.
