Not a fan of non-western in my western fantasy. That said, why is it always a Japanese Samurai from the Edo period? Medieval armor is far less flashy as is simply foot soldier armor. Korean armor was also more interesting as far as east Asian armor goes and much of the time, a lot less over the top in appearance.

Could be, could be. Of course, it could just be the angle that the piece is drawn at, too.

It's a good point that the PHB won't exactly have three times the content, being it's three times larger, due to all the extra images. But each image so far is no more than half a page, so it should be at least twice as large. And, it's likely they're previewing those pages specifically that have art. So I'd guess there's at least 2.5 times the amount of content.
Anything (art, flavor text, etc.) that sparks the imagination is a good thing, I'm just hoping there's more than that in the extra 200 pages.
I'm also hoping, when it's time for such things, that WOTC will release Basic in 3 PDF's equivalent to the PHB, MM and DMG so you can just get the parts you want/need. Players only really need the Basic PHB (PHB(b)). Experienced DM's will likely want the PHB(b) and MM(b), while 'newer' DM's, or those who want more info could get all 3.
Also, this would prevent having a (roughly) 200+ page PDF to get through.

By all indications, they are not going to break that up any further.

First you say you want traditional armor in your western fantasy, then you complain when they use traditional (read: popular) armor in the eastern style they are using for this particular picture. So you want, tradtional eastern fantasy armor unless they are using something that is non traditional so then you want something that no one knows about (korean armor) ... or something? Also you must have missed that this round of D&D they are trying to expand their horizon in their base game. If you want only western D&D fantasy, you might want to go back to another edition :) or deal with it in this edition.

Quite fond of that art.

So the PHB so far seems to be Basic rules plus art and extra flavor. Here's hoping for some extra meat, too.

I did notice that this 1 page, because of the art, actually contains less meat than the Basic soldier already presents. Presumably, the soldier's rolls for bond and flaw are on the next page (unless they've done something totally different there).
