D&D 5E Does it seem like Nerath was dropped like a bad habit?

So far I'm liking what I'm seeing in the PHB but I noticed one thing that kind of bothers me. There is mention of Dragonlance, Greyhawk, and of course Forgotten Realms all through the PHB but NOTHING about Nerath. Now I understand that this world never got a setting although the Monsters of Nerath gave us a lot of that and of course all of the adventures did as well. It just seems like omitting mention of Nerath is telling that we won't be seeing that world and I think that's a mistake. Nerath has advantage of barely being used except for John Roger's comic series (and possibly a novel that I didn't read?) and it's ripe for a GM to use that Points of Light idea that 4th edition brought to us. It would be a shame if it was just dropped from supported worlds just because it hasn't spilled over the other mediums that WotC is trying to cover.

Plus, we have that cool Conquest of Nerath board game that no longer has any connection to the rest of DnD.

Right now, I suspect the WotC team are trying to pretend 4E never happened and Nerath is a casualty of that.

On a similar note, the recommended reading for the D&D Adventurers League includes the 3E version of the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting but not the 4E Forgotten Realms Campaign Guide.

Have another look - it's there, as is Neverwinter Campaign Setting.

It just isn't hyperlinked because the PDF isn't out yet on dndclassics.com

Cheers!

Agreed. I have nothing against Nerath, but eliminating 4-isms is a good idea, for me anyway.

My problem with that is that Nerath was a nice basis for a GM to take off and run. It's a nice middle road for those who do not wish to start from scratch but also do not want to try mix their campaign into a well detailed world like Faerun.

Then why are the Feywild and Shadowfell part of 5E?

The simple fact is that there are a LOT of worlds created for D&D over the years. Nerath is one of the least detailed, with far, far more written about its cosmology than any other aspect. And the world details often just took ideas from previous versions of D&D!

Of the 19 gods in the 4E Player's Handbook, only 7 are new to the edition.

The bulk of setting material given to us so far is there as evocative flavor text. As the least used, barely developed setting, Nerath is also the weakest example to use for that purpose.

Personally, I really liked the generic-ness of Nerath. I bought Conquest and used the boardgame as the campaign world for more adventures than I can count over the last couple years. Great memories and fun associated with those wonderfully-named lands :)

While I did purchase HotDQ, I am still debating whether I should try to rename all the locations or keep it simple and leave it in the Realms.

Nentir Vale was the only thing I liked that came out of the 4e era. I was really disheartened when they canceled the setting book... Monsters of Nentir Vale was an awesome book.

I guess I'd say "of course" to dropping Nerath, since it's so strongly associated with 4E.

Shame, too... there were some nice aspects to the setting.

I'd say it's a minor casualty in the new editions step back from anything 4eish.
