They are all neutral evil.

EDIT: I think the variant is that you get the full imp and some magic resistance. But you're trading your soul for the bargain.

Since both the PHB and MM versions are CR1 -- what's the special familiar deal, exactly? Is it something anyone with Find Familiar can use, or is it an option only for Warlocks who can already have an Imp familiar (via Pact of the Chain)?

You can only get an Imp familiar with Pact of the Chain.

I don't know how much of this is new. They are, in fact crazy spawning frog monsters. They originate from a Spawning Stone the modron Primus cast into Limbo. As such, they hate modrons and will attack them on sight.

There was never a connection with Primus before.

The Spawning Stone was previously described in Ed Bonny's 2e Dragon material, portions of 'Tales from the Infinite Staircase' from Planescape, and elsewhere over the years, as the creation of the Slaad lords Ygorl and Ssendam who intentionally and ironically imposed a measure of order upon their own innately Chaotic race. On their own, knowing no true form, the original slaadi would have eventually by random mutation produced individuals more powerful than the Lords of Entropy and Madness, and so they saw fit to prevent that from ever happening.

The 5e material with Primus is a retcon yes, but depending on how it's written it might not be irreconcilable with previous material.

Some imps, when called as a familiar, have a telepathic bond with their master, can share senses, and can share magical resistance. It's a variant, and called out as something that happens as part of a Bargain.

The way I'll probably DM it is that modrons and slaadi hate each other. They'll kill each other on sight. Slaadi promote one version of their creation story, the one you mentioned, and the modrons promote the 5e MM story. The true is lost to time.

Maybe the whole thing is some weird religious war.

Forgive me if this has already been asked (this thread is huge lol)

From the PHB it appears that Devils (imps) are resistant to non-magical or non-silvered weapons but Demons (Quasit) have no such similarity such as cold-forged iron which we've seen in past editions. Does this carry over to the MM or is it simply a PHB oversight?

I also noticed they share the same general resistances & immunities accept the Quasit has lightning resistance, the Imp does not. So same question as above.

Many demons have resistance to non-magical weapons. Silvered weapons aren't mentioned.

Generally, it looks like demons are immune to: cold, fire, and lightning. Devils are immune to: fire and poison. Perhaps an argument for Elemental Adept.

I came up with this: Mechanus and Limbo are the only planes (well, besides the Outlands) with no layers. This is because the LN/modron conception of the afterlife/perfection is singular, well the CN/slaad conception is a plurality.

Modrons want everyone to share one common perception of reality, for everything to be like Mechanus. Slaadi want everyone to have no shared reality, for everything to be chaos soup with individual after lives dissolving all planar boundaries. Philosophical war? Definitely.
