I agree with the "one you like to play".

But a fun question might be, which is the most "powerful" and least powerful. Basically a question of balance.

5e looks to be very balanced for the most part. The big issue is that if your rest rate is significantly more often than the expected, those with daily (long-rest) powers will be over powered compared to their non-rest or short-rest peers. So casters will be OP in a lot of "outdoor exploration" games (one encounter per day isn't uncommon IME).

As far as my favorite, I think I'm leaning toward fighter or warlock.

Hiya.

Good answer, Sacrosanct. I was going to toss out a counter question; what dice color is the best to use for D&D? I supposed if that one ever gets definitively answered, we'll be able to do the same for what class is "best". ;)

Ok brehobit...once you define what you mean by "powerful", you may get somewhere, but as it stands the most powerful class is 100% dependent upon what is going on at that exact moment as well as a million other things...and also reflect advancing time in a campaign. Seeing as we are talking about an RPG, it's impossible to define "everything at the moment"; imagination knows no bounds. Fighter? Totally useless compared to a bard when you need to blend into an upper-class party to try and gain information. Warlock? Equally weak/pathetic when tossed overboard into the churning sea only to be attacked by a pair of were-sharks.

As soon as you take into consideration all the myriad of things going on in a campaign world, the "what is most powerful class" becomes a game of nothing more than "find the perfect scenario to prove my point". For every thread I've seen about this kind of thing, they always devolve into nothing more than what is generally referred to as a "white room scenario" (where everything is perfect in order to prove some particular point). There is no "most powerful" or "best" class (race, spell, item, etc) in an RPG...or at least not in any D&D game anyway. Every class/race has their strong points and weak points. When put into situations where their strong points are used, they rock. When put into situations where their weak points are exploited, they suck. Simple.

Everyone knows ugly dice roll best.

I agree with Paul. One class might be the most powerful in a campaign where the party regularly goes through a half dozen or so encounters before they have an opportunity to rest, while another class might be the most powerful if their playstyle is to allow a short rest in between every encounter.

What I have found is that with 7 players of different classes, races, and backgrounds, everyone contributes roughly equally.

What is best (class) in life? Class which is best used to crush your enemies, to see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women!
