I also think the heavy handed way your mods handle edition problems is pretty nazi like, but hey, you want peace here, so who cares if someone dislikes 4E. I hated 4E and thought it sucked ass.

Ok ban me now if it floats your boat dude. Or people can use ignore for edition wars, whoa who woulda thunk.

I'm sorry, man. But if a game ruined your friendships with people (multiple people? really?), that's on you and your friends, not the game. A game does not have that power. It's just a game.

This community was fractured by the Edition Wars. A full half of the community relocated to paizo.com in a fairly short period. I don't blame Pathfinder; I blame myself for letting it happen. It has been a long 5 years rebuilding.

Been here a while...
Yes, when you look at the product, they're very different. But from a business perspective, they're not dissimilar. They're a small niche product that caters to a small, dedicated fanbase of nerds, but the company that produces them is owned by a much, much larger company that views this product as irrelevant from a financial perspective but useful for generating Intellectual Property.

Hasbro likely doesn't care about individual versions of campaigns or a set timeline. They'll just look at see a source of characters and settings that can be plundered to form a mega-franchise like everyone in Hollywood seems to want now. D&D is a means to an end.

This is actually very similar to the continued presence of WWE SmackDown on the SyFy channel. The faithful science-fiction fans, along with some network execs, just hate giving wrestling two hours of airtime each week. The thing is, the money they get from it is incredible, compared to what the rest of the shows pull in. We all want to see D&D be in a position where Hasbro is happy with the money the brand makes, but the core rpg line isn't going to get there. If I have to see Spaceballs-level moichandising to get there, I'm okay with that. And if movies, comics, breakfast cereal, video games, and slot machines bring in another dozen tabletop players, is it that bad?

Hiya.

Ah, crap - Elemnental Evil is set in the REALMS? I had hoped for Greyhawk

I'm not sure how many others commented on this...but I'm with McIntma. IMHO, WotC has just dropped the ball big time with this. Here they have the PERFECT opportunity to branch out and show case another of their campaign worlds. The original ToEE was Greyhawk...why not keep it there? This makes no sense to me...it's like they're trying to make the FR the Core/Preferred World without actually having to come out and say it. Probably for fear of alienating all the other-setting fans. Their next "adventure path" could be set in Ebberon, or Dark Sun, or any of their other campaign worlds. If this is the beginning of a trend, I predict in 2 or 3 years we'll be right back to square one, with "edition warring" being transformed into "campaign warring". *fumes-at-the-thought*

Color me extremely disappointed. :(

I'm not interested in the Forgotten Realms. I don't want the Forgotten Realms. I don't really like the Forgotten Realms. So...I'm certainly a LOT less likely to buy stuff 'focused' on the Forgotten Realms. I'm also pretty damn sure I'm not alone in this...especially with all the influx of "other old grognards like me" taking up the banner of 5e as the current game of choice. If this keeps up, well, I can see myself and my group going back to our old 1e/Hackmaster4e preference (with some 5e stuff transposed, of course). After all, why spend money on something that seems to be actively trying to push us away? "Oh, uh, yeah...here's some 5e stuff, with a Forgotten Realms focus of course. Oh? You don't like FR? Too bad... I guess you can try to just ignore it or get with the program and accept it as you lord and master. It's not going away, so you may as well..." ;)

Man, given how careful they've been with talking about everything-- especially licensing-- I find myself wondering if Chris Perkins is the 'crazy loose canon' over at WotC. I wonder if Mearls has his palm smacked permanently into his forehead.

Not that I'm complaining if this all ends up being true.

'm not really familiar with you, and the Godwinning, aggressiveness, and comparing us to evil genocidal mass-murderers is not endearing, but I would rather you stayed and enjoyed the community. Are you sure that's what you want? My general policy is to immediately ban anybody who asks to be banned or who calls us Nazis, but I'm on a phone right now so you have a few hours. Let me know! :)

I dont mind staying, I do enjoy the community but if people hate 4E, why the heavy handedness? Anyway, your the one who said EN world is losing people, maybe it is because of the way you do business. The ignore function is a good thing to use in edition wars unless the perp is spamming threads, then some intervention is needed. But I'm just giving you some advise thats all. Other then the heavy handed way edition wars are handled, outside of that, it is not a bad forum.

Gosh, thanks! Phew!

And about the accusations of being genocidal mass murderers? A very sincere apology is in order, I think.

You missed the tense. That was in 2009. EN World is growing at a rate of knots since it rebuilt a couple of years ago. But thanks for the advice! :)

I think Perkins job description includes "slipping stuff so the social media has something to feed and buzz on".

He's doing a great job, and I believe I can say we* love him for it.

His job description also includes "putting on silly hats, make up, goggles and a red cape when DMing in front of audiences".

*At least most of us.

Oh, yeah, don't get me wrong. I love what Chris Perkins does. And maybe you're right-- they unleash him from time to time to drum up excitement. Probably he (and they) know exactly what they're doing. But I remember that one video they did awhile back where he dropped some info and Mearls got visibly uncomfortable (not angry or anything, just surprised).

I just read that OGL news and laughed when I saw that he'd said that and also talked about digital content. I mean, the party line up until this has been: "We're actively looking at these things. We don't have anything to announce yet."

I'll also acknowledge a fear that plans can change (and often do). I'd dread the level of disappointment some folk will experience if that happens. (see Dungeonscape for an example).
