D&D 5E [D&D 5e] Planescape- In Through the Out Door (Full)

Sorry about the slow response. I had a friend in from out of town and his flight was canceled while he was here and blah blah blah. I've been keeping up, though.

I'm torn on race. I think I may go tiefling, yes. I hope to post a character sheet tomorrow for you to have a look at.

3rd level sound about right?

Mask of Many Faces is limited because she can't look like anything bigger than a pixie, I think... Not useless, but fairly constrained, which means other invocation picks are probably better.

Also, she has Invisibility at will as far as I can tell. It's Concentration duration, but otherwise appears not to have limits.

So very powerful. :)

[D&D 5e] Planescape- In Through the Out Door (Recruiting)

Thanks for all the advice! I don't care if you're not playing the game, all advice is helpful to me! There is no rule as far as I know. There are so many creative players out there who come up with awesome, amazing ideas, it's great to have this huge resource of people. So, thanks :)

I'm definitely going with Beast Speech, fits the character perfectly. I'm looking at Agonizing Blast, Eldritch Sight, Eldritch Spear, Mire the Mind. I don't want to mess too much with my appearance, since I am so tiny anyway plus I can turn invisible at will.

Starting to look at spells. Suggestions there? I see they've changed the way most of the spells work. I was thinking:
0- (3) Eldritch Blast, Mage Hand.
1- (3) Witch Bolt, Hellish Rebuke, Protection from Evil
2- (2) Enlarge
3- (1) Dispel Magic, Remove Curse, Magic Circle, Hypnotic Pattern

As for her history it's pretty simple. She's the daughter of a Queen, probably just a small - mediumish village in the forest. One day she'll become Queen but there is one little issue. She's sweet, kind, good hearted and fun, everything a fairy should be. The issue is she needs to learn how to be a little meaner and less naive so she can one day take proper care of her people. So her mother sends her out into the world to learn about it, experience life and passion and different cultures and even danger, before she returns home to do her duty. She doesn't send her alone though, the satyr has been tasked with protecting her.

So based on her personality, I am trying to stick with non deceptive spells. I'm not completely against them though. She's just pure at the start of the adventure anyway ;) She does have the blast and can take damaging spells, after all she will protects her people. Her higher level is based on her mostly helping defend her home against animals and other fey creatures.

Blade Ward isn't a very good spell, for most builds. You trade your action for halving damage for a round. That's not a terrible trade for a tank or something similar, but for a warlock...who excels at -doing- damage much more than taking it...it's a bad trade. This is especially true if you don't take Armor of Shadows, which really means you want to leverage your invisibility and flying to remove yourself from attacks entirely, rather than try to tank them.

A 'melee' spell like Chill Touch gives you a nice offensive option in situations where baddies manage to get close to you...though invisibility means you can usually get away. So...hm...

Pity you don't get Shocking Grasp.

Well, looking at the list again, nothing jumps out as a 'must have' so it's all good at that point. Nevermind. :)

Invisibility at-will is pretty potent, isn't it? All the more reason to take the kid gloves off.

I am willing to run with it, though, and Picayune's g-g-g-ghostly powers, on the basis that these are the Outer Planes, and having powers that lead to solutions other than a head-on fight are to be encouraged. Not all monsters are there to be slain. Just a little advice, make of it what you will.

@Queenie Off to a good start, Liliana looks good so far. What seems like a smallish village to human-sized folk could indeed be a sizable kingdom for pixies, especially given the amount of living space a goodly number of trees would provide.

If you wanted to take Mask of Many Faces, I might consider allowing you to disguise yourself as animals of your size, but that would be instead of humanoids, not in addition to.

Lots of good solid advice from @Shayuri and tuxgeo. One thing.

Chill touch is actually a ranged spell in this edition. It deals necrotic damage and not cold, too. Everybody always seems to forget those things. :\ Not a bad spell all things considered, and I'd consider allowing a melee hack of the spell, but it probably doesn't do what you want it to do, nor does it seem to suit Liliana on the whole. It's probably deliberate on the designers' part that the warlock has no melee cantrips. Don't want to steal the Pact of the Blade's thunder.

@goatunit 3rd level sounds great. This http://daedaluswing.wikidot.com/planetouched is a pretty thorough cross-section of planetouched options you might find useful and/or inspiring. Tout or no, it does sound like Eurid would be the party's resident expert on the planes. :)

@tuxgeo I'd say there's room for maybe one more, if you're interested? Not sure you were asking, but I'll put it out there. I'm happy to have lurkers, especially if they have helpful commentary to add.

Is it? Hah! My bad then. Thanks for pointing that out.

I have the stats for Shard worked up. Going to be a challenge to operate on the same level as the others...but Fireballs flung with Elemental Adept have a certain flair all their own. :)

Been inspired a bit by Egyptian mythology in developing some of the backstory. Very enjoyable stuff.

Thanks for allowing lurkage; I wasn't interesting in playing in Planescape (the real world's enough of a challenge these days), but I did want to sneak that Tinkerbell joke in there before Liliana got finalized.

Edit to add: I didn't realize the pixie's Superior Invisibility was at-will, nor that the race was in EN World's "Races Database" so i could look it up here. (Still learning new stuff.)

Shayuri The Egyptian pantheon, eh? Looking forward to what you come up with. Especially if and how it interacts with Kelemvorite death rites.

Performance being a separate skill is a bit of an oddity in 5e. The rogue's Open Locks and Disable Device skills were simply folded into thieves' tools as a proficiency. Performance remains, but it's not all that clear what it actually represents, other than, say, acting or dancing. Showmanship, maybe. A sense of pageantry. The thing is, you roll tool proficiencies as well. It seems to be left up to a judgment call of the DM as to which is called for in any given situation.

How would you prefer to handle this? Just with an abundance of rolls? Playing the instrument correctly is one thing, possibly calling for a Dexterity-based tools check, but captivating an audience at the same time, that's Charisma-based Performance. A strong enough performer can recover from an error; a great instrumentalist's skill shines through even if the performance is a poor one.

Or is it simpler to just dispense with the doubled rolls? We could drop Performance as a skill, and let others (Persuasion, most likely) stand in for it.
Generally, the less rolling I have to do, the happier I am. I view Performance as a skill almost purely tied to the bardic tradition; very few classes outside of Bard are going to make use of Performance. Performance, in my mind, indicates how well the character plays her instrument, dances, or delivers his oratory. It's an indicator of technical skill that is simultaneously aesthetically pleasing to the listener.

Conversely, Persuasion is a skill that tends to be used by a broader assortment of characters. Persuasion is "diplomacy," for lack of a better word. It's a social skill relied on when attempting to sway another to one's point of view.

Is there an element of persuasion to a good performance? Sure. And there's an element of performance in any good persuasive tactic (packaging, argument, strategery in presentation of idea/s). Regardless, Performance and Persuasion are two separate skills, at least in my mind. I think you should keep them separate proficiencies.

That said, I don't feel particularly strongly about this issue. It's fine with me if you choose to conflate Performance and Persuasion into one skill we call Persuasion.
