D&D 5E A paladin's best friend!

Sacrosanct

Legend
The battlemaster fighter. We were playing a session yesterday and myself and another were playing paladins. Two other players were playing battlemaster fighters. When we faced an opponent that needed to be dropped in hurry (medusa, efreet, green dragon), it quickly became apparent that as soon as possible, the fighters would use commander's strike, giving each of us paladins 3 attacks in the round. Which of course all three were paired with divine smite at the highest spell slot available. The fighters were like, "I'll totally give up my 1d8+4 damage so you can have a 4d8+1d12+4 (great axe+str+3d8 divine smite with 2nd level spell+1d8 superiority dice) attack." And of course, the paladin also gets his normal 2 attacks, both with divine smite as well.

It was nuts. With that combo, the paladin can really nova in one round probably better than any other class that I've played or seen played so far. Against the dragon, I think I hit all three times, and the total damage was 9d8+3d12+12 damage. And this was at 5th level.

Making the rogue trigger his sneak attack would also be cool.

A rogue/Paladin with both Sneak Attack and Smite... Toss in three levels of fighter to get the expanded critical range and a Diviner wizard in the party, and you've got yourself a nasty combination. Fighter 3/Paladin 11/ Rogue X, perhaps?

Its a two way street because not only can the Paladin enhance the fighters defences with his aura, she can cast buff spells and even raise the fighter from the dead.

Haha, it would take me years to get a PC up to level 14+, and I really don't want to spend that time in mediocrity until I got the point where my "build" was where I wanted it. ;)

Speaking of auras though, it did come up. Are they stackable? Ie., if an ally is within 10ft of both of us, do they get both our CHA bonus to saving throws? Or just the highest? The DM ruled just the highest, but I wonder if it was in the books anywhere.

So just as an excersize, what would be the most horrific thing that a group with 2 fighters and 2 Paladins could face, I mean what would make the players go "oh, @&!?" ?

A berserker Axe that I got stuck with ;) Man, that thing was a giant pain, and totally messed me up lol.

But monster wise, I think the bearded devils were the worst. Those infernal wounds were horrible And yeah, a paladin can heal and get rid of them, but you're taking an action to do so. They were by far the toughest battle.

But to answer your question, the most horrific thing that a group of 2 fighters and 2 pallys could face? Opponents with heat metal. ;)
