D&D 5E Creative solutions to the hypothetical GWF/Sharpshooter issue

ENWorld has had--at an approximate guess--2,489,793.4 threads that either focused on, or evolved into, the debate as to whether the Great Weapon Master and Sharpshooter feats provide an unbalanced/unfair level of benefit over fighters of other combat styles.

I don't want to rehash that here. There are plenty of other places to do so. What I do want to discuss is this:

I believe that great-weapon users should do more damage than users of other fighting styles. That's sort of the point of the heavy weapons. Again, whether GWM provides too much extra damage is not something I want to get into here; for the sake of argument, let's agree that it should provide some extra damage, and move on to the discussion.

Now, while I don't think duelists or sword-and-board fighters should deal as much damage, they should be equally effective in combat. Which leads me to my point.

If WotC, or the population of ENWorld, or you specifically, were to design feats to make duelists, two-weapon wielders, and sword-and-board fighters slightly more effective in combat than they are, but in a way that does not resemble GWM or otherwise simply add to damage dealt, what would such a feat look like?

(Note that I happen to think Shield Master is an oft-overlooked option that is far more useful and versatile than many people seem to give it credit for. But I'm still interested in hearing other ideas for the s&b types.)

2d6 is already an ubgrade over 1d8 o they do deal more damge. Its just when that damage is more than about 50% extra problems will pop up.

I did think of a new weapon style for fighters and maybe rangers. Daggermaster similar to the archery one where you get +2 to hit with daggers. Not this can be used in mellee or ranged and has no -5/+10 option like sharpshooter.

Some better feats available for dex based melee might also be an option. Bonus dice of damage, bonus to hit, disadvantage to get hit as a reaction would be options I would be looking at. An avenger Paladin for example can actually cast bless and give himself advantage which lets them use GWM feat at full potential. THat is probably the prime example of how good GWM is compared with the other options.

I'm fine with two handed weapon fighters doing 10-15% more dps than the next maxed fighter(who has other benefits like more foes get hammered or whatever). More than 10-15% though and suddenly my games flood with two handed weapon fighters. I want each to have its own area but those areas don't have a huge gulf between them.

Shield master is definitely pretty awesome for some battlefield control. Knock bad guy down. Everyone beats on him.

This. I just fought a gladiator that did that to my character in play recently (just a straight damn Str save, couldn't even use my Athletics to resist!) and it was a royal PITA.

I think if the GWF and Sharpshooter tradeoff were disadvantage to hit rather than the flat -5, it might not be as popular. Once the AC of a given foe is known (and this will happen quickly) the numbers are crunched and if the target can be easily hit anyway even with the -5, then blowing out damage is a no brainer.

If left the fickle disadvantage mechanic, hitting lower AC targets is a bit less predictable.

We made the other styles stronger with a feat.

Dueling Mastery: You are trained to deliver deadly strikes to vital areas.

When wielding a one-handed melee weapon in one-hand, you can strike a vital area on your opponent taking a -5 penalty to the attack roll. If you hit, the attack does +10 damage.

If you score a critical hit while wielding a one-handed melee weapon in one hand, you do an extra weapon die of damage.

You'd have to add language about 'not already having disadvantage when choosing to use the feat,' so that it just doesn't become free damage whenever you have disadvantage for any reason.
