D&D 5E Out of the Abyss - No Drizzt afterall?

Second Most Angelic Devil Ever
Oddly, I heard a few, outside those with Planescape experience, hinting the same with Tiefling Warlocks since Tiefling at one time was not an "accepted" choice back in the days right before 4e. But, tiefling did not really have the press of Drizzt clones and the legions of would be "misunderstood devil" types never materialized in my neck of the woods.
Ahem. Tieflings Rock!

I've been a fan of Tieflings and Aasimar since the original Planescape. I loved throwing all kinds of odd never-seen-before NPC's at my players.

Also, the lack of Drizzt in this book makes me want to run this and definitely have him be a major NPC in the game, just to upset/screw with my players. I'll make them hate him, then love him/hate him, then have him show up to rescue them from Demogorgon when they're only sixth level and have him get killed.

Planar portals and accidents happen..

Perhaps it would be better to stop making assumptions about how individual DM's settings work. Personally, as a player and GM I despise the multiverse and planar portals between them. Therefore, you will not find them when I DM a setting.

A Drizzt clone is literally just that. Dual wielding CG drow Ranger who escaped the brutalities of the underdark and drow culture and has a black panther familiar of some sort. Heck some of the players didn't bother to do anything more than change first names but remain a Do'urden who is a cousin to Drizzt "destined to follow in Drizzt's footsteps." Some were even lazier than that and just hand in a character sheet with all of the above and Drizzt Do'urden as their character name. Add that to the millions of one off versions of Drizzts, Ganondorfs and Sephiroths you run into in MMOs and it becomes what we would like to call oversaturation.

I know a player whose PC name is whatever anime he's watching at the time; no matter if the name fits or is appropriate the race/culture/world.

There is always a "kewl" race that people want to play as, either because its OP, its grimdark, or such.

I've seen it with

Drow elves
Kender (doubly so in non-Krynn games)
Averial (winged) elves
Tieflings (non-Planescape) later, any planetouched (aasimar, genasi, etc) in a non PS game.
Warforged (again, non-Eberron)
Half-dragons (not dragonborn, but legit half-dragons in 2e and 3e)
Half-giants (outside Athas)
Homebrewed half-vampire races (of which I saw many)

Seen at least one of each in my day.

There is a certain level of irony in TTRPG players complaining about someone else liking a mary sue character.

There is nothing inherently wrong with a mary sue type character. There is a reason so many books that have such a protagonist also sell well. And if you want to play a PC who is an ideal and reflects some wish-fulfillment on your part in my game, more power to you. I am not going to deride your day dreams. Ultimately I think part of the reason the game gained popularity to begin with was because it allowed for just that. Same with comic book superheroes. It can be a fun thing to do in a game.

The Drow, in general, have been kind of Mary Sue.

Yeah, that's what I was saying. I generally don't like the term because I think it's more a flaw with a writer than with a character or group of characters, but the Drow wee basically designed as villains for a game, so many of their attributes can be traced back to game mechanics. Any time that's the case, you'll have some work to do to overcome it.

I don't mind that they are depicted as more capable at a lot of things than other types of races because generally it makes sense.

I agree with a lot of your points. I don't mind Drow or Driz'zt, generally, although he's never made an appearance in any of my games.

His Mary Sue status I attribute to him starring in his own line of books. I mean, in fantasy fiction of this kind, are there really any main characters who don't come across that way?

No, I don't think that's the reason most people don't like him. Drizzt is like Kanye West. At first, kinda cool. But now he's shoved down your throat every time you turn around with "look at how uber awesome I am!", interrupting a lot of other good storylines with his unwanted cameos. "I'm gonna let you finish PCs, but first let me tell you how I fought demons like this before..." Kanye just announced his bid for 2020 presidential race. I'm waiting for the book where Drizzt becomes leader of the Menzo and a demigod above all men.

Hah well I don't really get much exposure to Kanye West. I think he's pretty avoidable, although not entirely. I don't listen to his music or watch anything where e may appear, except for that 11-12-13 concert for a couple years ago. Oh and the gay fish episode of South Park.

I don't think Driz'zt really shows up all that often. What? A couple of cameos in a video game or two over the years? Being given stats on the 3rd edition FR book, along with a ton of other FR characters?

If you don't read the novels, he's totally avoidable, for the most part.

Yeah, prett much. Escapism and power fantasies often go hand in hand.

Heh. I can't honestly say I've ever seen a Driz'zt clone in any of the games I've played or DM'd.

I have seen a bajillion Conan clones. Far, FAR too many Man Without a Name clones. And an unbelievable number of Merlin clones.

I find it rather baffling that players choosing to base their character off of one genre character is met with such hate and derision, but, basing their characters off of any other genre character is fine and dandy.

If you find it baffling, it's because that's not what people are doing, or are arguing against. It has nothing to do with genre. I said it earlier and it bears repeating apparently. People don't like the Drizzt clone because it's way overdone (way more than any other literary character), in combination of a min/maxed build, which also irks a lot of people. Drizzt has turned into the face of D&D FR, and is pushed everywhere. Just look at the most recent ad trailer for OotA. For someone who can be omitted in the actual adventure, he sure has a lot of screen time.

I have seen more attempts at homages/clones for both Wolverine and Ichigo from Bleach (especially, the former) :p
