D&D 5E So what happens when a non Drow attempts to become a dryder?

Whether driders are Lolth's chosen or cursed only matters if your gods directly interfere in your world.

It's entirely viable to decide that your gods are more distant, and the magic will happen regardless of Lolth's will if the appropriate ritual is performed.

At that point, you can decide whatever you want when it comes to the effects of a ritual upon a member of a race that it was not designed for. My suggestion would be to add some spidery features to each of the characters (different for each one, and with upsides and downsides).

It seems that I dragged this thread off topic with my confusion as to why being a Drider is a curse. Sorry about that.

Back on topic, I don't think that the OP should make the player characters Driders, but if the OP does want to make them spider-like, they could hand out this feat I made (of course, changing the fluff is a perfectly valid option):
SPIDER QUEEN’S IMAGE **
Prerequisite: Neutral Evil (DM’s discretion, can be ignored)
In their foul veneration of the Spider Queen, the drow have mastered creating many new creatures that manifest spiderlike features, called arachnoid creatures. Occasionally an intelligent humanoid is chosen for this roll. Sprouting thick black hair growing in rough clumps, large multifaceted eyes, and mandibles dripping with poison, such creatures are horrible abominations that range from loyal servants of the drow to deadly renegades on the outskirts of drow civilisation, and humanoid arachnoids are often mistaken for were-spiders in hybrid form. As such a creature you gain the following benefits:
You gain +1 to your Dexterity score, but take a -1 penalty to your Intelligence score. You gain a climb speed of 20 feet, your natural armour becomes 11 + your Dexterity score (if it isn’t higher), you become immune to being charmed, and you get a bite weapon with which you are proficient, which deals 1d6 piercing damage. If you successfully bite a creature, you can force them to make a Constitution saving throw. If they fail, they take 1d4 poison damage. If you force a creature to make this saving throw, then you cannot force them to make this saving throw again until it is recharged (recharge 5-6).

Ok so thanks for all the reply i have taken a totally different direction basically the pcs where captured by a mindflayer thrall (they dont know this yet) who has tasked them to finding artifacts of a fallen race(AkA objects from the mindflayer empire). When they enter the final chamber where the transformation would take place im totally going to make it obvious that the room isnt right and have it be an illusion revealing they are actually inside a mindflayer space ship more specfically in one of their labs where they have been "playing god" and trying to create there own driders to. This hopefully wont scream flayer at them as there not major lore buffs but may be interesting when they collect some of the bits and their captor seems very pleased.

See examples of the Yuan-Ti race for some possible... uh... mis-matches of Driderism.

Maybe one guy gets a spider head and spider legs on their own body with their own legs (Man-Spider).

Maybe one guy gets his head on the front of a giant spider.

And then the poor guy who gets 6 human arms on a giant spider body...

Yeah. It confuses me as to why they are cursed. If they look like her, shouldn't they be revered by the Drow as embodiments of the evil of Lolth.

Well, remember that the drow are in an abusive relationship with their goddess. They "revere" here in about the same way as an abused child "reveres" their parent - with fear dressed up as adoration, toadying to avoid wrath.

Also note that becoming a drider entails removal from drow society, as such. Any desires you had are now subsumed by your close duty to the goddess (and remember this is traditionally considered a chaotic society, where personal freedom is a primary goal). You have no *personal* power as a drider, nothing you achieve for yourself. You will have no children, enjoy few if any of the joys of the flesh, and don't get to glory in your successes, because you don't have any for yourself.

Other races Can become Driders, Lolth threatens a Gold Elf with the possiblity of becoming the first Gold Drider.

She hasn't bother up to this point, but if you want you could make it part of Lolth's latest plans.

Thanks. This is the best reason I have heard, and has swayed my opinion (If only to the Boon with Downsides status shared with immortality (live forever but see your friends and family die))

That's a pretty cool idea. Maybe I'll implement this in my world.
