That doesn't change when a particular rule was changed.

No but that does not change that some people would not have know the rules changed. I have no clue of any rules of 4e. Barely 3.5 I only played it one time and do not even remember allt he ones from back in the day been so long of 1e and D&D which was like 90% of what I played back in the day.

Which is why I provided correct information instead of assuming the incorrect information was presented with ill intent.

Now even people that have skipped 15 years worth of editions or just don't remember them well know what I know on the matter, assuming they've read this thread.

This is easy.
You are laughing at the dinner table causing Jasper to spill his milk.
Your mom says "behave or I knock your face clear off your head!"
You laugh.
Mom ( head of the quilting bee, spelling bee, and assassins club local 666) swings.
Combat begins. Mom nat 1 Sneak 15. you nat 20. Your passive perception 9.
Mom has surprise. You laugh and don't notice anything is up until your face is on the floor.
Combat begins. Mom nat 1 Sneak 5. you nat 20. Your passive perception 9.
Mom has not surprise you. You take the dodge action until she hits you and your face is on the floor.
Jasper in either case blows milk through his nose!
edit to add
As her bonus action she knocks Jasper's face off too.
Meanwhile Evil Dad Merric has speared the last chicken leg.

One little rule that trip me up is initiative ties. I always go with higher bonus to resolve initiative ties as opposed to deciding myself or asking for a d20 roll.

I'll only do the latter if the bonus is also the same.

Me too. I do exactly the same thing.

This does not contradict RAW, because RAW says that the DM decides, and the DM can decide any way he damn well pleases, and this method pleases the DM. It should also please the players, because it can be seen to be fair and impartial if the DM establishes that this is the way he decides.

I don't think it meant to say the DM can decide the method in case of ties but rather the order in itself. RAW a DM could decide to have a creature with a lower initiative bonus win a tie for exemple.

One thing I always have a hard time remembering is the shape of cube spell.

I'm used to envisioning them as surrounding the caster, instead of emanating from them.

So, I get thunderwaves that effect 15 ft around the caster instead of a 15 ft cube the place next to them
