I'm sure this question has been beat to death, but I can't find an answer to MY specific question:

Can Monks use their DEX Bonus to attack AND damage when "throwing" a spear?

Yes. And, since it has such a short range, you could feasibly throw your spear. Run to your target. Hit him with flurry of blows (flying jump kick, followed by a sweep. or, something like that). Add your favourite open hand technique. Spend a ki point to attempt a Stunning Strike (an ally with a Bestow Curse spell could help with this). Then, use the rest of your movement to withdraw and let your comrades finish off the stunned bbeg with advantage.

Why is this more advantageous than running up and stabbing him with your spear?

Or is it just cooler?

Just cooler. Yeah, I could run up, and stab with two hands and get the boost to damage. Then, do all the rest. But, for me, it has more of a Wire Fu feel to throw the spear while running up to the enemy; leap and strike; then, fade away. It's funny how that one change in timing of the attacks makes it seem more fun.

you obviously need to throw the spear first so that you can leap up and stand on the spear embedded in the enemy as you kick him repeatedly in the face
