Travice's character Fjord, may technically have the highest charisma mechanically of all of our fantastic heroes (some of whom hide behind civilians in a fight so not heroes per se.) but does that mean he's automatically the party face? No. Not necessarily. And sometimes that is brilliant having the face be of a a mediocre charisma but believe they are the face!

Also, did Travis chose to play another str big-strong-dumb PC? I haven't finished the first episode quite yet, but his half-orc has been introduced. I really hoped he'd go for something different. I feel like he has a lot to offer, but seems intimidated to play smart/charismatic characters.

In Ep2, it looked to me like Travis is going to play Fjord as smart.

Sam Riegel is by far the best reason to watch this show. What a great guy and player; he often carries the whole show on his shoulders without stealing attention. From a purely entertainment point of view I honestly think I'd prefer to watch Mercer DM for just the guys.

Well, to each their own. I find them all charming, but Laura Bailey in the bathtub scene is still my favorite bit of improv from the show so far.

Thanks also for the language feedback. The kids are 9 and 11 and very interested but I think it was more ‘can I watch with them around?’ than ‘will they want to watch’. A few f bombs are ok in our house but maybe not a steady stream. If I watch I’ll try it out without them.

Yes, there are f-bombs as others noted, but it isn't a steady string of foul language. I play D&D with my kids, so they have a passing interest when I have it playing. Mostly asking what everyone is playing, what they are battling, etc. Also my kids (age 9 & 14) are big anime fans, so watching Roy Mustang, Lust, and Levi Ackerman and others I forget play D&D is probably more entertaining for them.

One of the reasons I want to watch it is because of its importance but it’s just too much time to invest - I don’t play my own game 4 hours a week let alone have a spare 4 hours to watch other people play. That is part of why its impact seems so generational.

For sure! It takes me several days to get through an episode, but I also don't really watch much TV. Occasionally I'll get into a Netflix show, but like Critical Role, I can stream it on my own time, at my convenience.

I agree with all this.

Unfortunately when I have tried to play a high charisma character the other players assume I will be the face. So I'm sticking with Socially awkward characters for a while.

Just because you are the min/maxer, you are the party combat winner.

Just because you are the cleric/bard/druid, you are the party healer.

Just because you are the bard/warlock/sorcerer/paladin, you are the party face.

Just because you are the fighter/paladin/barbarian, you are the party tank/meatshield.

Just because you write things down, you are the party's memory.

Just because you are the treasurer, you divide funds equally....

Assumptions. The mother of all warlocks.

1. No in my old group. The guy who played the War Cleric insisted on playing the Party Face.
He hated it after we hit 8th level and my Sorcerer began to repeatedly outshined him in social situations (charisma 20 artistic, hippy half-elf > charisma 14 libidinous, sociopathic tiefling)

2. My old group never had this assumption, because the DM made it very clear that he was in charge of such things, and that he had no qualms about playing favorites.
If you played a class that relied upon better equipment, your character would simply find better stuff and more of it.

I remember saying my Barbarian Speaks, Reads, and Writes in 3 different languages. He's no scholar, but he's no dummy either.

I played a one-shot gnome barbarian that had a high intelligence. This gentile old librarian liked to steep different teas and have tea ceremonies. However if he lost his place in his book his glasses would fly off and he would get terribly angry. Afterwards he was always very apologetic.
